We’re less than three months away from the arrival of the industry’s longest-running and most-heavily collected baseball card brand of the year seemingly every year.
It’s 2016 Topps.
And among the unusual inclusions in that one is the honeycombed creation you see above.
What is it? It’s a 2016 Topps Laser booklet — either a standard booklet card or a trifolding autograph or Relic book with the meat found on the center panel still seen covered up here in a teaser image released by Topps this week.
Why is this one included here? Well, 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Topps Laser as a standalone brand. It was a short-lived run then, but a unique one in a landscape then that was searching for an identity and a new way after the MLB strike.
We’ve seen these types of books in 2015 Topps Supreme earlier this year, but that’s a high-end hits-driven brand. This time around, it’s for the masses.
