He might be the biggest thing going in The Big Apple right now — and that makes him a big deal on cardboard.
His name is Kristaps Porzingis and he’s playing so well for the New York Knicks right now that the team’s marquee player, Carmelo Anthony, has already dubbed him the future of the franchise.
“He’s going to lead this organization long after I’m retired,” Anthony said in an SI.com story today. “Hopefully we can hoist one or two [championship trophies] before that happens.”
Demand for Rookie Cards and inserts from this season’s basketball releases so far from Panini America reinforces the idea that this 7-foot-3 forward-center from Latvia has promise. So do his 13.7 point and 9.1 rebounds a game in his first 15 games in the NBA.
The 2015-16 Panini Contenders auto seen above? That’s a $775 card on eBay — completed sale not asking price. Asking prices are a tad more stout across the board now. How strong? Well, an NBA Passport auto limited to 99 has an asking price of $899.99. In all, more than 50 autographed cards of his have sold for more than $100 on eBay so far this season.
Not bad for a guy who was booed when he went with the fourth-overall in the draft this year.
