Buzz is a collector who has to be selective — can’t collect everything but would want to — so that’s why a day like Black Friday can be important.
It’s a way to try stuff I normally wouldn’t or something I’ve always eyed but never done simply because the price is right.
Blowout’s Black Friday Doorbusters have been revealed and there are some serious bargains to be found along with the previous waves of Black November discounts on other brands beyond these. Keep reading for my picks on the deals that would get my attention first.
BASEBALL — The biggest baseball cards of the last year or so in terms of hype and volume sold are Kris Bryant‘s autographs from 2013 Bowman Chrome (above) and 2014 Bowman Chrome. Both are found in boxes of 2014 Bowman Chrome, which might be the No. 1 target on many collectors’ minds. A limited number of these boxes will be available for $39.95 down from the original price of $119.99.
Honorable Mention: How about a 2011 Bowman Draft blaster box (with Mike Trout and Bryce Harper in there) for $9.95.
—
FOOTBALL — The 2013 Panini Rookies & Stars Longevity box caught Buzz’s eye simply because of its price. It’s just $9.95 down from an original price of $49.99. These boxes were originally only sold at Target stores and include four hits. With a Longevity design found only in here, they’re likely rarer than the standard Rookies & Stars cards, too.
Honorable Mention: How about a 2014 Panini Select hobby box for $29.95. There are four hits and plenty of Prizm parallels to be found here — along with all the NFL RCs one would expect.
—
BASKETBALL — A limited number of 2013-14 Panini Timeless Treasures boxes will be $19.95 — down from the original price of $90. Every box of this one includes two autographs and one memorabilia card with all of the top active veterans and rookies as well as a deep roster of retired players, too. Some of those guys don’t sign that much, so there can be hidden bargains.
Honorable Mention: How about a 2012-13 Panini Contenders hobby box for $29.95. There are four autographs per box here and three of those will be Rookie Cards from a double crop that includes Kyrie Irving and plenty more.
—
HOCKEY — Buzz loves booklet cards and, while I’m not a hockey devotee, a good sweater swatch inside a book is enough to melt my ice. That’s where a box of 2013-14 Panini Playbook comes in at just $29.95 down from an original price of $94.99. Every box of this one includes one booklet, one base card and one additional autograph or memorabilia card. For a beginner or just someone looking to dabble inexpensively, a booklet card can wow more than you might think.
Honorable Mention: How about a 2013-14 Panini Contenders hobby box for $39.95. There are plenty of autos in this one — and some single cards can have as many as eight sigs.
—
NON-SPORTS — They aren’t easy pulls, but the autographs of Harrison Ford, George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg can be found in Topps Indiana Jones Heritage and an eight-box case of this is just $129.95 — down from the original price of $474.99. Autographs and sketch cards fall in every second box or so, so there will be some gems among the retro-styled cardboard documenting the first three movies.
Honorable Mention: How about a case of 20 blaster boxes of 2010 Press Pass Elvis Milestones. You might find a hunk of clothing Elvis once wore for just $59.95.
—
GOLF — If you’re a fan of the PGA and LPGA, then this is your hottest deal on Black Friday as a 20-box retail case of 2003 Upper Deck for just $99.95 down from an original price of $594.99. You can find Annika Sorenstam Rookie Cards in this one as well as one memorabilia card per box.
—
MULTI-SPORT — This one isn’t a Doorbuster, it’s just a Black November deal (Wave 7) and it’s a fun one. A hobby box of 2008 Donruss Americana Sports Legends packs legendary baseball players and athletes and personalities from seemingly every other sport, too. This box is $59.95 down from an original price of $99.99. So many big names can be found in this one — four hits per box with at least one autograph — that it’s just fun.
—
RACING — Another Wave 7 box (meaning it’s available now) is 2012 Press Pass Legends, which is a past and present look at auto racing beyond just NASCAR with a high-end feel that packs three autographs and three memorabilia cards inside every 18-pack box. This premium brand is $99.95 a box down from an original price of $129.99.
