A perfect copy of a basketball legend’s Rookie Card reached legendary status on Saturday night in a sale via SCP Auctions.
The card is a PSA 10 1948 Bowman George Mikan Rookie Card, which is the only perfect copy in existence. It set what is believed to be a new record for a single basketball card with its sale.
The price?
After 17 bids, the auction closed at $403,664. The card previously sold at auction for $218,550 back in 2009.
As previously noted here on The Buzz, the auction also included memorabilia from Hall of Famer Jo Jo White‘s collection as well as full uniforms for Ernie Banks and Joe DiMaggio. The DiMaggio did not sell, while the Banks went for $161,484. Another big item was a one-of-a-kind PSA 10 1970-71 Topps Pete Maravich Rookie Card that went for $130,054 after 24 bids.
Two other items topped the $100,000 mark in the sale — a baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig went for $110,111 and a 1980-81 game-used Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers sweater sold for $100,266.
The most expensive item in the White collection was his 2008 Boston Celtics NBA championship ring, which sold for $53,759. Two replacement rings for those won during White’s career (1974 and 1976) sold for just more than $18,000 apiece.
