“Inducting Pete into the Reds Hall of Fame will be a defining moment in the 147-year history of this storied franchise. … He is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Reds uniform and it will be an unforgettable experience watching him being honored as such.”
— Cincinnati Reds CEO Bob Castellini
That was from the announcement on Tuesday as the team has decided to induct Pete Rose into its Hall of Fame and retire his No. 14 during the weekend of June 24-26.
Rose is baseball’s all-time hit king with 4,256 and he’s got plenty of other career records and accolades. He’s also on MLB’s Ineligible List for gambling on baseball and placing bets on his team while a player and a manager. That makes him ineligible to appear on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. The Reds Hall is another story.
While he’s “one of the greatest players to ever wear a Reds uniform” Rose also committed one of baseball’s biggest atrocities in a Reds uniform.
So, with that said, count Buzz among those who think this is a bad idea. (But, hey, whatever sells some tickets, right?)
