What happens when you have a retail-only, hit-per-pack product that can be condition sensitive with a likely modest print run and sometimes-rocky collation? A super collecting challenge — and a product that is available now at an outrageous price as part of Blowout Cards’ Super Bowl 50 sale coinciding with the big game.
How outrageous? Keep reading …
The 2014 Topps Turkey Red football set presents a collecting challenge with some surprisingly expensive cards — even for rookies who may not have lived up to expectations. Need an example of how expensive? Click here. Yep, that much … even for Johnny Manziel. And one expensive card that’s unsigned? Click here.
There aren’t that many $100 cards popping out of retail packs regularly, but these two cards are not alone in Turkey Red. In fact that second sale above might be underselling the card based on scarcity. Overall, it seems autograph asking prices are healthy, too.
Each pack of Turkey Red includes just 11 cards — nine base card Rookie Cards, one mini parallel and one rookie autograph. The checklist (seen below) includes just 100 cards in the base set and there are 10 very short-printed photo variations of top rookies.
So, think about that. To build a mini base set one would have to open 100 packs at $20 a pack with perfect collation. That’s not likely. With there being an autograph in every pack, there’s also not a seemingly unlimited number of packs made, too, though the price per pack should also reinforce that. The mini set isn’t an impossible challenge given the singles prices there, but it would have been tough. The real challenge here are the base set short-prints, which Buzz has linked to already, and the autographs.
For the autographs, there are 78 players found on the checklist and it seems the premiere players here are much tougher autos to land than others. Any of the Green parallel autos are tough with just 10 copies made per player. The Black 1/1 parallels? Well, they’re even pricier. Overall, it seems autograph asking prices are strong, perhaps a sign that there was a good amount of this wax that went unopened, though completed auctions also show some bargains.
On top of all that, there are printing plates and that’s it. It’s a small and perhaps doable master set except for all those variables that make it tougher mentioned at the start — retail-only, hit-per-pack product that’s condition sensitive with a likely modest print run and sometimes-rocky collation.
The cello-wrapped packs were placed into somewhat loose boxes and their chipboard stock in some cases paid the price — that makes high-grade singles tougher here though there may be a perception that they’re not worth grading because of their retail status.
The rookie class here includes some big names — some who have delivered. Among them? Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Derek Carr, Devonta Freeman, Khalil Mack, Teddy Bridgewater, Sammy Watkins, Allen Robinson, A.J. McCarron, Jeremy Hill and Odell Beckham Jr.
Check out the basic set and autograph checklists below.
