A priceless stash of autographed items and game-used shoes from the 1992 USA Basketball Dream Team is hitting the auction block via Heritage Auctions, giving deep-pocketed collectors a shot at owning items from the one team that arguably revolutionized basketball on a global scale.
More than 20 lots are up for grabs — all from the collection of Dr. David A. Fischer, who was the physician for the gold-winning squad, which is packed with legends.
“It’s arguably the most significant offering of Dream Team game-used gear ever to surface in the collectible marketplace,” said Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “Due to the brief existence of the team, and the enormous fame and wealth of its members, very little Dream Team material has become available.
“This is a rare opportunity to acquire such significant material from the Dream Team,” he said. “Like the team itself, there will never be another auction like this again.”
Signed and game-used shoes are available from nearly all of the members of the Hall of Fame squad — the team was inducted together in 2010 while nearly all members are Hall of Famers on their own as well. The team consisted of Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, John Stockton and Duke star Christian Laettner.
“I’ve enjoyed these items and will always have the memories and friendships,” Fischer said. “However, I think it’s time to allow other basketball fans and collectors a chance to enjoy these as well. My family and I are hopeful the new owners will share our passion and continue to care for them with a similar love and respect.”
Among the items are Fischer’s championship ring, a pair of Air Jordans signed by Jordan — the only items presently topping the $12,000 mark with 23 days remaining in the auction — along with two team-signed presentation balls, a team-signed poster and other items used by the doctor. The main items are game-used shoes.
You can see all of the shoes in our gallery below, while all of the USA auctions can be found here. The auctions close on May 14.
