So, a collector walks into a card shop and buys a raw Michael Jordan Rookie Card … stop us if you’ve heard this one before.
This time, though, the card went to Beckett Grading Services for examination.
This time around, the typical “it’s not real” diagnosis did not happen. Instead, Blowout user Nathan Burns, aka BradyJames, got some good news.
It graded a BGS 9.5.
Of the 8,574 copies of the card graded by BGS, just 430 have received that mark. And, more importantly, only six copies have topped it for a BGS 10 grade.
“I thought it was a [BGS 9],” he said of his hearing the news. “I had waited 25 years to find a clean raw one, so I was nervous but hopeful.”
He also said he received the news along with his wife.
“My wife and I were talking after work and I noticed it had graded, so I told her to come look with me and it said 9.5. Honestly, I was just glad I had found the unicorn I had always looked for in all my card shows/trips. You want to find something new for so long and then It happens. It’s just happiness.
“I also want to say the card shop that sold it to me has always been helpful and more than fair to me. I owe him a tip when I see him.”
Buying the card raw is probably not recommended as it’s heavily counterfeited. In this case, though, it was a risk worth taking. See the reactions to the news here.
