Chris Sale’s historic start grabs attention & puts focus on key cards

He’s been an All-Star, he’s been an ace and he’s been a bit overlooked on cardboard.

But that last part could be changing soon for Chris Sale.

With his third complete game of the year Thursday night, the Chicago White Sox ace became the first pitcher in nearly a decade to start the season 9-0 after nine starts — and he’s only the fourth pitcher to reach the mark that fast since 1950. He’s also off to the second-best start in franchise history with the record being a 12-0 run by Eddie Cicotte way back in 1919.

Chris-sale-2011-Topps-Gypsy-Queen-autoSale has a 1.58 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 68-plus innings and he also leads the league in complete games, shutouts, innings and WHIP this season, which is his seventh as a big-leaguer. The start, of course, puts him easily on pace for the first 20-win season of his career.

His Rookie Cards can be found in a dozen 2011 brands from Topps, but his first cards can be found in 2010 Bowman products and in 2010 Donruss Elite Extra Edition. Overall, he has more than 2,300 different cards and nearly 650 of those are autographs. His only RC that’s autographed is his Triple Threads card, which is limited to just 99 copies.

Parallels of his 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft auto are historically decent sellers, though raw copies of his standard card have topped the $100 mark in recent days.
