Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant had a big game last night — one that some thought had never been done before in the history of the game, going 5-for-5 with three homers and two doubles.
And now we have a Topps Now card to show for it, too.
A dominating night like this one also reaffirms his place in the game — at least among young stars — as well as his Chicago Cubs’ place as we march toward the All-Star break.
Bryant is tied for the National League lead with 21 homers, is third in RBI with 57 and first in runs with 59 — all while hitting a respectable .278 in just his second big-league season. The Cubs, of course are still running away with the NL Central with a 10-game lead over the second-place Cardinals while also carrying the best winning-percentage in MLB.
Bryant’s Rookie Cards from 2015 and his prospect cards from before that should remain among or compete to be among the most sought-after in the game today as the possibilities of a Cubs World Series victory get people thinking about cardboard. A Cubs championship could be the biggest thing the hobby has seen — particularly with so many young stars — since the home run chases of Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. But one could argue that it could be even bigger given the disappointments that the steroid era has taken away from fans and the hobby today.
We’re hungry for those kinds of real moments and games like Bryant’s last night are a reminder that we should be ready for the possibilities to come, too.
