One of baseball’s top prospects is getting the call on Monday.
The Houston Astros will call up former LSU star Alex Bregman after a solid second season in the minor leagues where he’s hit .306 with 20 homers and 61 RBI in 80 games between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Fresno.
“We feel like this is a good time to add him to a good team,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch told the Houston Chronicle. “We’re rolling along pretty well. He doesn’t have to come up here and be anything but himself and contribute at a couple different positions.”
Bregman was the second pick in last year’s MLB Draft behind Vanderbilt star Dansby Swanson, who was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks before being shipped to the Atlanta Braves in the off-season. In two minor-league seasons, Bregman has hit .300 with 24 homers and 95 RBI in 146 games.
He’ll make his debut Monday night against the New York Yankees.
When it comes to cardboard, Bregman already appears on more than 550 different cards with nearly 300 of those being autographed. His first Rookie Cards are not likely to appear in any 2016 products given the date of his promotion, which makes him more likely to be the top guy in 2017 releases from Topps and Panini America. He will, however, continue to appear in prospect brands as planned.
Bregman’s earliest cards came back in 2010 when he was a member of the USA Baseball 16U team along with Albert Almora and Corey Seager. He’s appeared in various USA and prospect sets in recent years and his first MLB autographs arrived in 2016 Bowman with more in 2016 Bowman Inception.
His rarest parallel autos in 2016 Bowman command top dollar right now in the hobby, while sold prices on his 2010 Supefractor auto and his Red Refractor from this year both were quite strong as investors anticipated his arrival.
