What’s Buzz-worthy: Originally announced as a multi-sport brand, this release for Black Gold is all about college football and that probably means you’ll find a bit deeper lineup of college guys than you might expect. That can be a good thing for collectors — and maybe a bad thing as it makes those elite names a bit harder to pull at this premium box price. Most of the name power in this box came from the base cards and metal inserts, though a jersey card of No. 1 pick Jared Goff probably doesn’t hurt. One thing to keep in mind on these cards is that they are player-worn jerseys and not game-worn. That’s becoming more and more common, but that also means that impressive premium pieces are perhaps a bit easier to find. There are two packs per box in this one but it’s probably best ripped as a full box as they do not deliver an equal number of autographs. In this one, one pack had one auto, while the other had two. Both had a metal card which is quite thick but simple with plenty of acetate and foil. Overall, the distinct look here is what’s been seen in past Black Gold releases, though one might hope that the gold pens used to sign could be improved or replaced with something else more bold. The good-looking autos are seemingly out-numbered by iffy ones when it comes to the visual quality. Overall, though, if you’re a fan of Black Gold you know what you’re getting here — and fans of college football, especially those who are more of a collector than a flipper, should enjoy this one. If the high-end price worries you and you’re not chasing the biggest names, pick off singles once they start arriving online more heavily.
