What’s Buzz-worthy: Is there another retro-styled baseball brand out there with more details and surprises inside? It’s doubtful and this box of Allen & Ginter shows an example of how that happens, though it’s not the greatest box out there in terms of flashiness. The 11th edition of this brand is one that has a pretty deep autograph checklist, though it’s perhaps not as flashy in past years when it comes to elite ink, though big names like Hank Aaron and Kevin Costner can be found. The minis are back — and they look better than past years with many images that are perfect for both that size and the standard cards. The stock here has changed from a crisp white to more of a a clay-coated dark stock. It feels right. Although this is a brand that doesn’t deliver an autograph in every box, it can come close in some cases. The Rip Cards weren’t witnessed here but they are two per 12-box case as part of a lineup that really hasn’t changed dramatically in the last few years. Some of the non-baseball inclusions are perhaps a stretch but they can easily be ignored when one lands a big name. The Baseball Legends set is one that feels like it could become the basis for something more — maybe a Relic set — but it stands as a highlight among the standard inserts. All in all, this is another strong Ginter release.
