U.S. Olympic gymnasts heat up Topps cards after gold-medal win

This 2016 Topps Olympics Relic of Simone Biles is limited to only 50 copies and sold for $350 on eBay.

The Rio Olympics are well underway and, so far, many of the stars in the field of play have been either those we have seen before and have plenty of cards (Michael Phelps) or newcomers without anything (Lilly King).

But the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team has claimed gold and that has helped collectors and dealers claim green when it comes to their cardboard.

Now, of course, some of the demand has been there all along — regardless of outcome — but three of the “Final Five” appear in this year’s Topps Olympics release.

This Aly Raisman auto Relic wasn’t even close to being her priciest sale on eBay — and it went for $90.

The team consists of Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian. Douglas, Raisman and Biles have cards.

Generally, there’s a strong market for gymnastics memorabilia — there are plenty of third-party authenticated autographs with high price tags among active auctions  — but these cards are the safest and simplest way to collect the newest U.S. stars.

Biles cards have sold for as much as $350 for an autographed Relic limited to 50 copies and $200 for a Gold Medal parallel. A Douglas 1/1 autographed Relic sold for $230.50, while a Gold Medal parallel sold for $114.50.

It’s not just hits, either, as a Raisman 1/1 parallel sold for $175, while her 1/1 Relic went for $136.29. Other autographs from her typically sell for as much as $100, which is pretty strong considering she’s had cards in the 2012 Topps Olympic set.

These are also impressive sales considering they all come from a wax box with a starting price of around $75 that typically yields as many as two autographs.
