Early Black Sabbath lyrics & memorabilia set to hit auction block

f525i1-3-768x1024A collection of postcards, lyrics, notes and more from the early days of legendary and pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath will be hitting the auction block late next month via a Sheffield-based auction house in the United Kingdom.

Among the pieces going up for sale are hand-written postcards from Ozzy Osbourne to his parents, which are signed with his legal name, John, as well as lyrics, posters and flyers from when the band was briefly known as “Earth” and then after it adopted its name inspired by a Boris Karloff film.

f525i1-1-768x1024The items will be sold via Sheffield Auction Gallery on Sept. 30 and are from the period of 1968 to 1973. Sabbath’s first album, Black Sabbath, arrived in early 1970 and was followed by Paranoid that fall. By 1973, the band — Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Osbourne — had become world-wide stars and had released five albums. The band has since sold more than 70 million albums and Osbourne has become a metal icon in his own right as well as a reality TV star.

The lot, which includes far more than what is seen here, will not be broken into individual items. It will be sold all as one grouping. You’ll be able to see all of the items in the lot by clicking here once an auction catalog is online.
