Buzz Break: 1983 Topps Greatest Olympians rack pack

Do you like Buzz Breaks? We recently launched 12 in 12 — a series of a dozen breaks of past wax boxes and wax packs in a dozen hours. This is a single-pack break in that style — but not the launching of a new 12 in 12. (We’ll perhaps have one of those later this month. Click the logo below to see the previous posts in the series.)

What’s Buzz-worthy: For Olympic fans and through-the-mail autograph collectors, this 99-card set was one of the only options out there for years. It was made by Topps and carries its distinct style from the era, but isn’t branded as a Topps set instead being a “Finder Image International” release under license by the USOC. (A 1991 Impel U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame set and an Upper Deck set in 1996 are two others of serious note from the past along with Topps’ recent releases.) The big draw in this set is a Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) card that wasn’t found in this pack. Others of note in the set include Dan Gable, Dorothy Hamill, Oscar Robertson, Sonja Henie, George Foreman, Mike Eruzione, Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Wyomia Tyus, Floyd Patterson, Wilma Rudolph, Joe Frazier, Jerry West and Bruce Jenner. While a pack includes nearly half of the set, several of those names were not found here. You can pick off this set relatively inexpensively or build it from a few packs — and it’s a easy way to start collecting Olympic sets.
