What’s Buzz-worthy: This wax pack offered a lesson on older wax coming (sadly) via a good card. These packs are small and the set is, too, meaning there’s not a lot of incentive to rip into these packs these days — you might be better off to just buy by the set if you find one. This pack was a snoozer until I got to the middle where there was a second-year Rickey Henderson with a relatively clean cut and decent centering for the timeframe. Then, as I shuffled through the pack, my finger ran across the back of the Henderson card … where there was a wax stain. A wax stain on a card that wasn’t on the back of the pack — and its globs of wax are actually worse than the one that was on the back of the loosely sealed pack. (I also should have known something was up when there was a second layer of bubble gum dust in the middle of the pack away from the gum.) That’s one of the dangers of old wax and one reason to buy from trusted dealers and not blindly on eBay. Either way, compromised packs can still happen when it’s just a wax seal between you and your cardboard. A pack with a Henderson would have been an A for this collector — it’s one of the best cards in the set — but the wax stain hurts.
