Big autographs, WWE Network shows, newcomers, ref cards & more on 2017 Topps WWE checklist

The final checklist for 2017 Topps WWE is here and the flagship brand for wrestling fans is, in a word, stacked.

Some of the biggest autographs in WWE history are inside packs for the first time and there are a number of inclusions in the release that are unique to the brand and appear to set the stage for another update set later in the year.

Undertaker‘s first Topps autographs — and just his third certified sigs for any company ever — will be in this one along with the first WWE autographs of Goldberg. Both had their likely final matches at WrestleMania 33 earlier this month. Other autos of note here will include Brock Lesnar, Ric Flair, Mick Foley and Eric Bischoff along with a crop of NXT and Legends autos that include Asuka, Beth Phoenix, Torrie Wilson, Kelly Kelly and more from the women’s side. A number of Triple Autos will spotlight many of those names together — and there are even more surprises with inked Relics. (See the checklist below.)

The base set is where some surprises are found — namely cards of referees, which is a first for WWE under Topps. It’s an interesting move as it wasn’t that long ago that referees were not to be mentioned by name on the air — they won’t be big moneymakers but they are firsts. They can all be seen in the exclusive gallery below. Joining them will be a number of NXT newcomers such as Ember Moon and cruiserweight stars such as Jack Gallagher who have been seen on Raw more in recent month but not yet had regular-issue cardboard.

Even the small assortment of legends in the base set also have some newcomers and past stars who haven’t had cardboard in some time. A first is Princess Victoria, who wrestling with WWE in the early 1980s and hasn’t had cards just like Judy Martin, who also is in the set. Meanwhile, Ivory, Beth Phoenix, Torrie Wilson and Terri Runnels have had few cards in recent years — some without cardboard in more than a decade other than last year’s successful Divas Revolution set.

Over on the insert side, there are insert sets for Total Divas, Breaking Ground and The Stone Cold Podcast that add WWE Network cards into the fold and some memorable moments for fans of those shows.

This was a really poorly planned set, there was no need to include the referees, every announcer both ringside or backstage analyst. The planning of the set is even worse when more of the Cruiserweights could have been added to the base set, or the fact that the base is missing important names like Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, Dean ambrose, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Naomi

From Buzz: Those not found in the set will be in the upcoming Series 2 release.
