What’s Buzz-worthy: This is one of the most-colorful trading card sets ever made — on the fronts with all of their light-bending qualities and on their backs with their vibrant pastels and textures that feel like they were ripped out of a Saved By the Bell-MTV-Zubaz-loving trendy kid’s 1989 closet. And yet it works. This box delivered an autograph, which is typical in every third box, along with 11 other inserts and parallels. One of those inserts was the toughest standard insert to find — the Showstoppers (1:64 packs). The parallels are simply marked somewhere on the backs so you know what type of card they are — a good thing since describing these things would be complicated. Since there’s not a hit in every box, these boxes aren’t as expensive, either, making it a brand to consider if you like the looks and need something to collect for fun. (There are money-making cards to be found here, too, of course with some big, big names on the autograph checklist and seriously short-printed pulls.) The general approach is simple — a cutout image placed upon a number of different fronts with different stocks and foil patterns — but it works. It would be interesting to see this approach used in all sports and to see the reactions from some collectors.
