What’s Buzz-worthy: What a difference a format makes. This $15 hanger box includes a hit just like a blaster box but raises the amount of inserts (and the variety) enough where it feels like so much more. The previous blaster break here included 15 inserts/short-prints while this one had 19 — and a number of them are more-colorful inserts and Red parallels along with the parallel hit and there are fewer RCs that also make it feel like there’s a lot more. It works. … As said in the previous break, Panini America’s Donruss brand drops its retro feel for a new season and it’s likely a move that’s in part to make an Optic version of the release much stronger later in the year. Unfortunately, this one just doesn’t feel like a Donruss set in how it looks. It feels a lot like a Score or Prestige release. The Optic cards — particularly Prizms and parallels — will look good but the base set here, while crisp and clean, just feels “off” to me for the brand. … The base set here is meaty — 300 standard cards capped by 100 short-printed rookies between RC logo rookies and Rated Rookies — so you’ll find names you might not expect and that will make landing a lot of top stars in a box a bit tougher. If you’re a fan of Donruss but weren’t wowed by a blaster, watch for these boxes — which are right alongside hitless hanger boxes. Check the side panels and look for green stripes to know it’s the memorabilia version.
