What’s Buzz-worthy: One card can make a pack and this single pack included arguably the biggest card in the set today right on top — a Mariano Rivera Rookie Card. It’s his only Rookie Card, so this has no other competition out there and that helps its value. Because this card was on top, it’s not perfect — there’s a slight surface gloss issue where the seams of the pack above this one wore on it over the years — but still a huge pull for this collector. (When 1992 Bowman arrived back in the day with its gloss and white stock it also came with a premium price — I passed after buying just a single jumbo pack that didn’t deliver.) This landmark set is the start of what we know Bowman to be today — at least for the 1990s before Chrome arrived in 1997 and Chrome autos in 2001. There are more than 160 RCs in this one with iconic first cards for Mike Piazza, Trevor Hoffman and Manny Ramirez along with memorable cards of Chipper Jones, Pedro Martinez and all of the stars of the 1990s. The Rivera, though, remains the big one — and it’s actually been counterfeited, so pulling it from a pack is a good way to go if you’re not buying graded copies. Without the Rivera, this pack was a bit of a bust, despite seeing some reliable MLB names from the past. If you don’t land a key star or a key rookie in a pack — and with that set size it’s completely possible — you’ll just have to marvel at the funk that is some of the street clothes photos found here. That Braulio Castillo card is far more legendary than his .188 career average with the Phillies.
