What’s Buzz-worthy: One New York Yankees Rookie Card made our Hour 1 break worth every penny, but can we do it again here with a Derek Jeter RC from a cheaper pack from a year later? The answer is a big, fat no — but we didn’t do bad (at least for the price) with a Nolan Ryan card and a Ken Griffey Jr./Sr. foil card in this pack. The foils are in every pack and some include other baseball families — Alou, Bonds, McRae — but the Griffey is arguably the best of those. (Others show notable prospects or stars.) There aren’t many highlights in this set beyond Jeter — and its photo (in a spring training T-shirt) is bland, while this set’s overall design is rather un-impressive, too. However, this release does include the only RC of Andy Pettitte and the first Bowman card with Mariano Rivera in actual New York Yankees pinstripes. The flatness of this release really sets the stage for the 1994 set which takes things full-bleed and adds foil-stamping to the mix with cleaner printing — more of a stadium club feel vs this. This one is no 1992 Bowman, either, so you might just grab the key cards you want and pass on the wax — unless you can find it this cheap (or cheaper). A clean and crisp Jeter would be worth a chase.
