Highest-graded Joe Namath Rookie Card hits open market via Heritage

It was today back in 1969 that New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath delivered on his guaranteed upset of the Baltimore Colts — and next month an elite specimen of his best football card will hit the auction block.

It’s a PSA 9 copy of his 1965 Topps Rookie Card, and it’s one of just five cards to get that grade — and none have ever graded higher.

Heritage Auctions will handle the sale in its Platinum Night Sports Collectibles sale ending on Feb. 24. Bidding will open on Feb. 2 and the card is estimated to sell for more than $200,000.

Copies of this card are rare in high-grade as the tallboy format used for this set made the cards tough to store over the years and the Namath is a short-print on top of that. More than 1,300 copies have been graded by PSA with most ranging between PSA 4 and PSA 6. The most-common grade is a PSA 6 with 263 copies on the pop report, which you can see below.
