It was today back in 1969 that New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath delivered on his guaranteed upset of the Baltimore Colts — and next month an elite specimen of his best football card will hit the auction block.
It’s a PSA 9 copy of his 1965 Topps Rookie Card, and it’s one of just five cards to get that grade — and none have ever graded higher.
Heritage Auctions will handle the sale in its Platinum Night Sports Collectibles sale ending on Feb. 24. Bidding will open on Feb. 2 and the card is estimated to sell for more than $200,000.
Copies of this card are rare in high-grade as the tallboy format used for this set made the cards tough to store over the years and the Namath is a short-print on top of that. More than 1,300 copies have been graded by PSA with most ranging between PSA 4 and PSA 6. The most-common grade is a PSA 6 with 263 copies on the pop report, which you can see below.
