What’s Buzz-worthy: A week ago right now, a Tua Tagovailoa autograph might be only sought after by the more-dedicated of the Alabama Crimson Tide fans as he was a freshman quarterback who merely had moments of greatness in clean-up time of routs this season. A week ago tonight, though, Nick Saban put him in charge at halftime of the national championship game down 13-0 and he completed 14 of 24 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns to secure his coach’s sixth NCAA title and a firm place as a legend in school history — and he’s not even started a game yet. Now, he’s known by a lot of people. The immediate deluge of people knowing his name after an insane performance sparked asking prices upwards of $400 for some of his rarer autos from this one — the only place to find his autos — and it prompted me to pick off the last two boxes I found one place for less than $70 a pop. This box paid off with a Red parallel Metal auto of the Crimson Tide star on the bottom of the box — the first card I saw when pulling them out because the top card here was actually a bonus redemption card. The Tagovailoa card here is the right color and its rarity probably makes it among the pricier ones out there (though it’s permanently headed to my personal stash). These boxes are for the long-term prospector or fan of the college game — and most of the cards note where a player committed to. The on-card Tour autos with portraits do not have that info but they were signed earlier to get that on-card ink — a plus. I’m not a prospector, merely a fan of one school, but this first box of any All-American Bowl cards I’ve ever opened would be hard to top.
