The Atlanta Braves have the worst record in baseball but they’ll be one of the most-watched teams when it comes to hobbyists the rest of this season thanks to a call-up that appears to have paid off pretty well on Wednesday night.
Former No. 1 overall draft pick Dansby Swanson arrived and went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in his big-league debut. The home-state star’s promotion is about more than just performance, though, as less than 10 months ago, he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization — and now he’s immediately one of the faces of a franchise aiming to rebuild. It’s a franchise with plenty of hobby favorites in the past and it doesn’t hurt that there’s a new stadium coming next year, too.
Now, the questions come about cardboard. Will this Rookie Cards now be included in 2017 Topps Series 1 and 2017 Topps Heritage? We don’t know that yet — but we do know he’s among today’s Topps Now stars on a call-up card — not once but twice.
One of the more-impressive feats of the summer in baseball ended on Sunday night — and you may not have even known it was happening.
Cleveland Indians catching prospect Francisco Mejia had his 50-game hitting streak snapped. It’s a streak that began for the 20-year-old High-A Lynchburg Hillcats standout on May 25 and is apparently tied for the fourth-longest streak in MiLB history.
For the year, he’s hitting .345 with nine homers and 73 RBI in 351 at-bats.
With the first pitch he saw as a big-leaguer, Willson Contreras delivered and that might spark more future deliveries for collectors as he’s not got that much cardboard just yet unlike all of those other young Chicago Cubs stars.
His first pitch resulted in a pinch-hit two-run homer — and that’s resulted in his first MLB Rookie Card, a Topps Now card available right now and only for the next 20-plus hours.
But it’s not his only card — or his only card to come.
They’re back.
A Twitter-only parallel to Bowman only available via packs given away online last year are back for 2016, according to Topps, but they’re coming to collectors in a different way.

It’s listed by eBay user tcbuilt28 in Seattle, Wash., with a Buy It Now price of $14,999 — along with a $2.75 shipping fee. (Update: It reportedly sold for $7,000.)

This year’s prospecting flagship brand, 2016 Bowman, arrives soon from Topps and the company released the final checklist today.
What will be found inside packs when it arrives on April 27?
When 2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball arrives on March 30, the new brand will include a first-time signer for the company.
That signer is Los Angeles Dodgers rookie pitcher Kenta Maeda, who signed with the team after a successful career in Japan and made his spring debut this past weekend.
“Maeda is a popular player on a big market team with dominant international statistics,” said baseball brand manager Zvee Geffen. “It’s a combination driving excitement for fans everywhere, and Topps is the only place collectors will find his Major League Baseball-licensed autographed cards.”
Baseball fans were surprised when No. 1 overall draft pick Dansby Swanson was traded to the Atlanta Braves but prospectors might have been even more surprised — and perhaps bummed — considering that the trade happened on the eve of 2015 Bowman Draft‘s arrival.
But Topps already has him trading in his Arizona Diamondbacks jersey — and it will be in packs of 2016 Bowman.
International free agents are always intensely watched as the players from outside of the United States can sign at younger ages to get a quicker start on their MLB dreams.
In 2016 Bowman (click here to see our First Buzz), they’ll get their own insert set as well as an autographed version — both sets will be dubbed International Ink.
