Dandy Dozen: Twelve Aaron Judge autographs to consider chasing now

What happens when a New York Yankees rookie hits his league-leading 12th home run of the season?

Baseball cards just keep selling.

Aaron Judge is that Yankee and thanks to several years’ of prospecting sets and his 2017 Rookie Card arrival he’s arguably the hottest cardboard in the hobby today. As we documented here on Monday, he’s got more than 400 different autographed cards already — and there’s undoubtedly more on the way — and that’s a good problem to have.

Norman Dale autographs add some ‘Hoosiers’ flair to 2017 Topps Series 1

s-l500

It’s not baseball but it’s the first surprise in packs of 2017 Topps Series 1.

What you see here is an autograph of “Norman Dale” aka Gene Hackman, who was the coach of the Hickory High School basketball team in Hoosiers.

How rare will this autograph turn out to be? It’s probably one of the toughest ones, though it was on the announced checklist for those who looked closely enough to spot the name. The card has parallels and a 1/1 Birch version just like others in the set — but those aren’t on peoples’ minds just yet. Why? The first copy to hit eBay already has an impressive asking price.

Hackman had never signed a certified autograph before despite appearing on plenty of Topps Superman cards from his time bringing Lex Luthor to life.

A 10-card release begins a set that will continue in Series 2 and Update later this year and this series will include Lauren Shehadi (RC), Kevin Millar, Mike Lowell, Greg Amsinger (RC), Ryan Dempster, Sean Casey, Harold Reynolds, Dan Plesac and Smoltz as well as an MLB Tonight card.

A number of that crew’s members already have cards as players (click to view a Buzz archives piece) — but there will be several debuts in the forthcoming releases. Meanwhile, a number of them haven’t had many autographs and all nine found in Series 1 will have ink.
