Autographs of Alabama’s new star Tua Tagovailoa scorching with national championship win

If you saw this coming, you need to be coaching The Big Game next year — and every year after that.

Alabama freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa took over behind center for the Crimson Tide down 13-0 at halftime and delivered a game-winning 41-yard TD pass to DeVonta Smith in overtime to seal a 26-23 victory.

And that makes his U.S. Army All-American Bowl cards from Leaf Trading Cards the hottest cardboard on the planet for the moment — and there’s a decent amount of options to go around, too.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban’s historic title chase could spark new interest in already hot autographs

With a victory tonight, University of Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban would equal a giant not only in the history of college football but a giant in his school’s history.

His Crimson Tide plays in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Paul W. Bryant Drive down the road from the Paul W. Bryant Museum and the Bryant Conference Center — all reminders of Bear Bryant and his NCAA-record six national championships and 323 career victories. (Saban is at 285.)

Tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship is Saban’s sixth title-game appearance in the last nine years and with a win he’ll have his sixth season title for his career. Saban had his chance at tying Bryant last season when his undefeated team lost in the final seconds on the final play of the game against Clemson, which Alabama knocked off in a rematch this year to advance to tonight’s game against the Georgia Bulldogs. Both of Alabama’s postseason foes this year are coached by former Tide assistants, Dabo Swinney at Clemson and Kirby Smart at Georgia, but neither has autographs and football card appearances as easily found as the legend of today, Saban.

Some of Alabama & Georgia’s biggest stars already have football cards thanks to prep bowl games

The college football world got a pair of classic showdowns on Monday night and will get a third next week when the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs face off for the College Football Playoff National Championship.

There were some dominating performances for these two squads in the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl and the good news for collectors who might not know is that a number of those stars now set to chase gridiron history already appear on fully licensed football cards thanks to card companies’ deals with prep spotlight games such as the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the Under Armour All-America Game.

In the case of the Bulldogs and their game-winning star Sony Michel — as well as his fellow bruiser RB Nick Chubb and QB Jake Fromm — they can all be found on Army cards from Leaf Trading Cards. Michel’s first of more than 40 cards was made back in 2011 and nearly all of the are autographed. Chubb has around 30 cards from 2014 and beyond, while Fromm has more than both of them with nearly 50 signed. His are all from this year’s set — and this trio is likely not alone for Bulldog cameos as there have been plenty of cards made for the event in past years (some wax is still findable — there’s even a Vault release on the way).

The Crimson Tide guys? There’s a lot more mystery there …

Aaron Jones, O.J. Howard & Eddie Jackson grab Sunday spotlight

With Leonard Fournette out due to injury, Deshaun Watson on a bye week and Kareem Hunt on Thursday night, yesterday’s NFL action was a stage primed for a new rookie arrival or two.

And three did.

Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones put up his best game of the season on Sunday with 17 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown while the spotlight was on QB Brett Hundley playing in place of Aaron Rodgers. Jones also caught three passes for seven yards. This fifth-rounder out of UTEP actually had a 125-yard game in Week 5 and a score in that game, too, but that was all lost in the glow of Rodgers’ fourth-quarter comeback win-sealing TD against the Cowboys.

Jones appears on fewer than 100 different football cards so far in 2017 releases and has a modest number of autographs that are only found in Absolute, Certified Cuts, Leaf Draft, Gold Standard and Unparalleled. That sounds like a lot, but in reality it’s nine cards in Unparalleled and no more than five (and mostly three) in others. That’s not a lot when he’s in the spotlight. (Update: He’s also in Prizm, which arrives this week.)

Sometimes collecting doesn’t make sense — and that’s just fine

Stabler-auction
The recent Ken Stabler Career Collection sale via Pristine Auction was one on my collecting radar from the second it was teased and on my mind until the final gavel came down earlier this month.

Simply put, I had to have something.

Why? Stabler wasn’t the first NFL player I ever met — he was probably the second — and I had his autograph a dozen times from various appearances where I played autograph hound in the past, but I knew I had met someone unique every time I ran into him. I knew that the MVP awards and the game-used items would be out of my reach. I knew that the game balls would be scooped up by serious collectors just like many of the odd mementos in the auction that included everything from wedding photos to belt buckles, cowboy hats and mix tapes.

But I knew I had to have something.

Kenny Stabler auction commands thousands via awards, memorabilia

main_2-Ken-Stabler-1976-Hickok-Belt-Award-Stabler-LOA-PristineAuction.com

Earlier this month the late Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame but this past weekend the treasures from that career entered the hands of collectors around the world.

The auction of “Snake” Stabler’s personal collection of memorabilia via Pristine Auction ended on Sunday night with one six-figure item that didn’t reach its reserve and many others of note. In all, the auction generated nearly $200,000 in sales.

The priciest item was his 1976 Hickok Belt Award for Professional Athlete of the Year (above), which reached $107,427.60. It’s an honor that was awarded the final time with Stabler’s win and this is the first copy of the award to hit the open market. It’s an 18K gold belt buckle with a three-carat diamond, a three-carat ruby, a three-carat sapphire and 26 diamond chips totaling 5.5 carats.

Ken Stabler’s personal memorabilia to be sold via Pristine Auction

main_1-Ken-Stabler-1974-National-Football-League-Players-Association-NFL-MVP-Plaque-Stabler-LOA-PristineAuction.comMore than 450 lots of memorabilia from the collection of a former Alabama Crimson Tide and Oakland Raiders great are headed into collectors’ hands soon as they are now on the auction block.

Trophies, game-used memorabilia and more from the collection of Ken Stabler, who will be posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 6, are up for grabs after his family decided to part with them. “Snake” died in July 2015 after a brief battle with colon cancer.

“In honoring Ken Stabler’s requests, his family has chosen to make items from his personal career collection available to the fans of Mr. Stabler’s career through Pristine Auction,” read a release from the Phoenix-based company. “It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity … to obtain a piece of sports memorabilia owned by legendary Oakland Raiders quarterback and 2016 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Ken Stabler.”

Making the Grade IV: Joe Namath, Ichiro, WWE stars & legendary ink

Buzz-Grading-Diary-NamathLike many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it’s to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it’s to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.

Here’s the fourth Grading Diary here on The Buzz …

Kevin Turner’s NFL legacy will reach far beyond any cards or statistics

Kevin-TurnerFormer NFL fullback Kevin Turner played just eight seasons as a pro, retiring from the game at age 30 in 1999, but his story and his efforts to help players suffering from health issues after retirement will resonate for years.

He died on Thursday at age 46 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The former New England Patriot and Philadelphia Eagle was one of the lead plaintiffs in the concussion lawsuit against the NFL that led to the billion-dollar 2013 settlement that was finally approved last year. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2010 and since then had worked with his foundation to help research and raise awareness.

Alabama’s Derrick Henry heading to NFL — and already into collections

DerrickHenryHe may not end up being a top-10 pick, but he’ll definitely be a target of collectors.

Alabama junior running back Derrick Henry is headed to the NFL with a formal announcement to come on Friday. This comes on the heels of a Heisman-winning campaign where he led the Crimson Tide to a national championship and set single-season and career rushing records for the program.

Henry is rated as the second-best running back by ESPN behind Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott in a draft that, based on some projections, may not be super-stocked with collector-friendly offensive players (QBs, RBs, WRs) among the first-rounders.

Buzz Poll: Alabama’s Derrick Henry or Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott — which superstar will you collect?

Derrick-Henry-Ezekiel-Elliott

Two of the top Heisman Trophy candidates this year already have cardboard and certified autographs thanks to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl sets from Leaf Trading Cards.

Alabama junior Derrick Henry set the Crimson Tide’s single-season rushing record in a dominating 271-yard, 46-carry day against the rival Auburn Tigers on Saturday. Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott also put up a dominating 214-yard day with a pair of touchdowns in a rout of the rival Michigan Wolverines.

Alabama’s Derrick Henry might be new Heisman front-runner — and he already wins on autograph cards

DerrickHenryWhen the No. 2 LSU Tigers took on the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night, it was supposed to be a showcase game for the Tigers’ Heisman Trophy candidate Leonard Fournette, who has been a dominating presence this season with more than 1,300 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.

What it turned into after a convincing 30-16 Crimson Tide victory over the previously unbeaten Tigers was, potentially, the national arrival of Alabama RB Derrick Henry.
