This 1961-62 Fleer NBA box shouldn’t exist all these years later — but it’s on auction block right now

This sealed box of 1961-62 Fleer basketball cards really shouldn’t exist at this point more than 50 years after it was made, but it does and it’s worth a tad more than its original price of just $1.20.

(Yep, that was just $1.20 for the whole box.)

It will be selling for a tad more than that soon as it’s among many high-end items up for grabs in the current Robert Edward Auction. How much?

Among his hit creations on TV? The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game and The Gong Show, which is where his cardboard career comes into play to a limited degree.

Buzz Poll: Looking back in time, which Bo did you prefer to know?

s-l1600

Bo was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s as a college football star, a professional baseball and football star and a marketing star. Everybody knew his name and they still know why.

And then suddenly one day it was gone.

Sure, Vincent Edward Jackson played some baseball after his final NFL game — that hip injury was 26 years ago tomorrow — but he was never the same. And in an interview today he had a different take on his career.

“If I knew back then what I know now,” he told USA TODAY Sports, “I would have never played football. Never. I wish I had known about all of those head injuries, but no one knew that. And the people that did know that, they wouldn’t tell anybody.”

His career as a pro — in both sports — lasted less than a decade but he’s easily one of the biggest icons of his time. It’s a story worth checking out if you missed it and it’s worth revisiting if you didn’t.

Here, though, we simply have one bit of curiosity presented below.

Black November Wave 10 is here — and here are five deals to consider

beachboysns

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com’s Black November Wave 10 hits today.

Many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes that caught this collector’s eye.

s-l16002013 Panini Beach Boys hobby box
This box is admittedly probably off the radar of many collectors but that doesn’t mean that it can’t deliver. In fact, these can deliver well if you pull the right ink. This Brian Wilson card here? It sold for more than you might think and he’s not alone when it comes to autos in there that have topped the $100 mark. Like the Panini Country release, there are non-traditional collectors chasing cards here to build sets or chase stuff they like with no regard for what something “should” cost based on what it is or its scarcity. Meanwhile, they may not know where to buy boxes — or not want to. Those things can lead to some surprising results — and that’s not the only surprise. Check out the price on this box.

David Ross just might be toughest Cubs autograph to land this year

david-ross-2002-spx-rc

David Ross‘ final Game at Wrigley Field came with a serenade from Eddie Vedder on Sunday night, and as he marches toward retirement there’s one thing for sure about the Chicago Cubs’ 39-year-old catcher.

ross-2016-heritageHe’s easily among the toughest autographs on the team when it comes to certified cardboard.

That’s something worth noting as his career comes to an end — and potentially in the biggest way possible with a World Series win for the historically downtrodden team.

“I’ve had a storybook year, honestly. There are so many things I can talk about that have happened to me over this year,” Ross told The Associated Press. “Everybody was looking at me like, dude, Eddie Vedder just dedicated the whole seventh-inning stretch to you and I’m like, my mind’s blown. I’m thinking about being out of the game and he’s a quality individual. He’s just a good person, rock star, everybody knows who Eddie Vedder is. He says my name — it’s a huge compliment.”

Now it’s time for Day 3 as we near the weekend with a larger slate of signers and plenty of action. You’ll never know what big items you’ll see (how’s that box up top look?), and there will be items you’d never imagine finding because, well, you probably didn’t know they existed.

Keep reading for more and to see a gallery that will grow throughout the day as the doors open shortly.

Dennis Green is who we thought he was — a coach with very few cards

s-l1600

“They are who we thought they were” may be a sound bite he’s remembered for, but Dennis Green also will be remembered as being what many thought he was.

A pretty decent football coach.

The former Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals leader died from an apparent heart attack on Friday at age 67. He last coached a decade ago with the Cardinals, going 5-11 to cap his 13-year coaching resume with 113 wins and 94 losses.

Tim Duncan retires after 19 legendary seasons with Spurs — and with very little signed cardboard

Tim-Duncan-auto2One of the NBA’s most-successful big men and under-rated talents has retired.

A member of the San Antonio Spurs for 19 seasons, Tim Duncan was a five-time NBA champ, a two-time league MVP, a three-time Finals MVP, a 15-time All-Star and his next stop will undoubtedly be the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

He averaged 19 points, 10.8 rebounds and three assists a game for his career and retires as the Spurs’ career leader in games, minutes, field goals, rebounds, blocks, points and plenty more. He’s also a guy who’s not signed autographs much at all in recent years as he’s turned down impressive amounts per sig from card companies.

As Swin Cash’s career comes to a close, there’s not much cardboard for collectors to chase

Swin-Cash-AutoThe WNBA is in its 20th season and one of the best all-around players in the history of the league, Swin Cash, announced on Tuesday that this will be the final campaign of her 15-year career.

“This game I love saved my life after a cancer scare. It’s provided for me and my family. It’s given me championships in college and the pros,” she wrote in a piece for The Players Tribune. “And it’s asked me whether or not I had the tenacity and perseverance to compete with and against the greatest athletes in the world, and take home the prize of prizes: an Olympic gold medal. Twice.”

She’s one of the top players statistically — yet she’s got very little cardboard for fans to chase. Her story is not a unique one as WNBA cardboard has been largely limited to a small boxed set each year since 2009.

Ichiro Suzuki’s 3,000-hit conquest may hit its finale sooner than later

1993-BBM-ichiro-suzukiHe’s been a legendary hitter in MLB since arriving in a Seattle Mariners uniform back in 2001, and he’s now 42 years old and on a tear with 10 hits in his last three games for the Miami Marlins.

He’s Ichiro Suzuki and he’s just 40 hits away from the 3,000 Hit Club as a major-leaguer. (Throw on 1,434 hits in Japan and, well, that’s a career mark even Pete Rose should appreciate.)

Even if you’re a deep-pocketed collector, chasing Ichiro cardboard isn’t easy. He’s been in high demand since his legendary Rookie of the Year/MVP season and there’s plenty of cardboard from that year alone. There’s also been plenty since. And there are also plenty of collectors from around the world who are watching his cardboard just as intently as they are watching the box scores right now.

eBay Buzz: PSA 10 Michael Jordan sticker fetches big money

PSA-10-Michael-Jordan-stickerFocused basketball collectors on the Blowout forum recently noted an uptick in high-grade 1986-87 Fleer stickers, which makes sense since that landmark release is a heavily collected set.

But the sale of a Michael Jordan sticker from two years later — a set that’s much easier to find — might spark even more interest as a PSA 10 copy of an 1988-89 Fleer MJ sold for big bucks Tuesday night on eBay.
