National Baseball Card Day is set for Saturday with free cards & more

National Baseball Card Day is this Saturday.

The hobby shop event will have participating stores in the United States and Canada giving away free six-card packs to visitors. It’s a promotion that hasn’t been done since 2008.

A bonus card of Kris Bryant will only be available with purchases. It can be seen above.

It’s a New Era in baseball cards as Topps joins forces with cap-maker

Topps and New Era Cap are teaming up to bring exclusive baseball cards to fans — and hat wearers — as part of a promotion that spotlights the company’s key players.

A nine-card 2016 Topps New Era baseball card set — with autographs and autographed Relics randomly inserted — will be available at LIDS stores beginning today.

“We felt that working with such a historic company like Topps on this collaboration was a perfect fit,” said Tony DeSimone, Category Director Baseball, New Era Cap. “We believe that creating special cards with on-­field caps swatches will resonate with both Topps and New Era’s tremendous fan bases.”

Topps’ retail Mega Boxes are home to mega-bargains if you discover the right players & parallels

If you’ve done some cardboard hunting at the retail aisle, you may have passed right by the home of some of the hottest baseball cards available in stores like Target.

The card above? It’s a 2015 Topps Chrome Update Black Refractor of reigning National League Rookie of the Year Kris Bryant and it was only found in a 2015 Topps Update Mega Box — a retail box with five Update packs and two exclusive Chrome Update packs inside.

It’s serial-numbered to 99 copies and sold for $100 on eBay. Because there are only two Chrome packs per box, these have been selling quite well because key guys aren’t simple every-box pulls even for their base cards. (You can find boxes and cases at Blowout right here, though.)

Buzz List: Players to watch in this year’s World Series

With the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets squaring off in Game 1 of the World Series tonight, there’s plenty of collecting potential for both squads

Why? While there are some young stars and veterans who were once much higher on the radar of collectors in the past, there isn’t one unquestioned hobby power player in the group. You know, one guy whose cardboard will be on the minds of everyone with a championship in hand.

Instead, there are a few players with big potential here … so it’s time for a Buzz List.

Jacob deGrom has a cardboard edge besides The Big Apple, big hair

Rewind to a year ago and New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was one of the hottest autographs in the hobby simply because of one thing.

He didn’t have that much cardboard — signed or not.

This year, the big-haired right-hander in The Big Apple is working his way toward a potential World Series appearance with his Mets, building upon his 14-8 campaign as the reigning NL Rookie of the Year. And, just like last year, he’s got some pretty warm cardboard as he’s on the mound in Wrigley Field taking on the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series tonight.
