Bowman Platinum’s powerful return should impress with checklist alone

s-l1600-2Big names, big ink and a smaller than normal distribution is a recipe for a hot product with longer-term potential.

Some of the names on the autographed checklist should reinforce that potential — Alex Bregman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Brendan Rodgers, Daz Cameron, Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ, Lucas Giolito, Willson Contreras, Yoan Moncada, Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Julio Urias, Kris Bryant, Kenta Maeda, Mike Trout and Trevor Story. (And that’s just two of the checklists in this one.)

That product is 2016 Bowman Platinum, and it’s initially billed as a Walmart-only brand doing well enough that it’s now also available with 20-pack boxes on hand from Blowout.

Looks like 2016 Bowman Platinum baseball cards are on the way — as a Walmart exclusive

Top-Prospect-Auto
Bowman Platinum is apparently making a comeback.

How do we know this?

Topps released a final checklist for the baseball brand on Wednesday — and that makes it a likely candidate to be arriving very soon as a Topps.com exclusive. Update: Make that a Walmart exclusive.

It will arrive on Aug. 24 with a parallel rainbow that includes Purple (/250), Green (/99), Orange (/25), Black (1/1) and printing plates (1/1) parallels as well as Ice parallels only available two per “value box.”

Update 2: There will be two autographs per 20-pack box, while blaster boxes (value box) will have seven packs and a four-card Ice parallel pack. Fat packs will include 12 cards.

Julio Urias’ first Rookie Card comes via non-traditional release

Julio-Urias-2016-Topps-Now

Is it a Rookie Card? Is it not a a Rookie Card?

It’s got the logo and that’s the only card that can say that so far for Julio Urias.

The highly touted Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect made his major league debut on Friday night in New York and things didn’t go as planned as he gave up three runs on five hits and walked four in just 2 2/3 innings, a no-decision against against the defending NL champion Mets.

Despite this rough start, Urias was tabbed for a Topps Now card as part of the company’s daily real-time baseball card program and, for now, it’s also his rarest Rookie Card (it’s got that logo and he’s a rookie) with just 2,992 copies made. The quantity was revealed by Topps today.

Julio Urias to make MLB debut for Dodgers Friday night vs. Mets

Julio-Urias-2014-Bowman-ChromeIt’s go time for Julio Urias.

The highly touted Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect will make his major league debut on Friday night in New York against the defending National League champion Mets. He’ll be the youngest starter in MLB since Felix Hernandez back in 2005.

The 19-year-old from Mexico was 4-1 with an 1.10 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 41 innings this season for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Baseball America ranked him fourth overall on its 2016 Top 100 list — the best pitcher of the bunch. He’s actually in his fourth season as a pro after signing with the Dodgers as an international free agent in 2013.

Panini increases autograph output in 2015 Elite Extra Edition boxes

panini-america-2015-eee-baseball-yoan-moncadaWhen Panini America first revealed 2015 Elite Extra Edition back in October, it promised that the annual prospecting staple would include plenty of autographs — eight to 10 in the warmest of Hot Box scenarios and six autos for the standard boxes.

But there will be even more ink when it arrives next Thursday.

A lot more in every case.
