NFL Notables: Six rookies to watch after Week 1 … Hunt, Watt & more

There were surprises and new arrivals on the NFL rookie front — and that’s just Week 1.

Six newcomers stepped up with none perhaps more surprising the Kansas City RB Kareem Hunt, who helped the Chiefs pull off a dominating 42-27 win over the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on Thursday night. He had 17 carries for 148 yards and a touchdown — and seven catches for 133 yards and a 75-yard score. Not bad for a third-rounder out of Toledo.

As you should already know from last week, he already appears on more than 450 different cards with nearly 300 of those being certified autos. He’s got 15 RCs so far by the standard (non-insert) definition and nearly 140 memorabilia cards and is found in most 2017 releases — just like most of our other notables from Sunday.

Who made the cut? Keep reading.

Kareem Hunt’s dominating debut puts spotlight on his football cards

There’s a new NFL star after Thursday night’s season-opener — and it’s not Angry Tom.

It’s Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Kareem Hunt, who helped his team scorch the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots with a more-than-impressive debut in a 42-27 spanking of Tom Brady and his team. Hunt’s final line? Just 17 carries for 148 yards and a touchdown — and seven catches for 133 yards and a 75-yard score. Not bad for a third-rounder out of Toledo.

The good news? Hunt has a ton of cards for collectors to, well, hunt.

Tino Sabbatelli’s first NXT ink is here — but he’s signed plenty before

The arrival of 2017 Topps WWE NXT this week marked the certified autograph debut of aspiring WWE star Tino Sabbatelli and just his third cardboard appearance, too.

But it’s far from the first time he’s sat down to sign autographs for a card company.

Postseason Superstars: This week’s icons include Antonio Brown, Aaron Rodgers & more … and who’s next?

AntonioBrown

Five catches, 124 years and two touchdowns.

That’s the final line for Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown in Sunday’s 30-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins in their playoff-opening game. At this point, it’s the kind of showing that we expect from one of the league’s elite who had 106 catches for 1,284 yards and 12 TDs this season.

His 2010 Rookie Cards show him fresh out of Central Michigan and can be found in more than 20 brands that season, including Absolute Memorabilia, Bowman Sterling, Certified, Classics, Crown Royale, Donruss Elite, Epix, Exquisite Collection, Limited, Gridiron Gear, Plates & Patches, Threads, Contenders, National Treasures, Prestige, Rookies & Stars, SP Authentic, SPx, Score and Sweet Spot. You can expect to pay top dollar for anything of him that’s relatively rare and his auto RCs (Exquisite, Plates & Patches, Contenders, National Treasures, SPA and SPx) will be even more volatile and in-demand. It just comes with the territory.

Sunday Six: Memorable (and cheap) cards from 1992 Pro Line Portraits

Muhammad-Ali

There are many sports cards sets out there from the past that aren’t valuable in the financial way at all but they can carry some intrinsic quality that should just resonate with some collectors anyway.

Maybe it’s just because Buzz ripped these packs in the past — or maybe because they are just so much more different than anything made in the years since — but one set that feels that way for me is 1992 Pro Line Portraits. It’s a football card set that’s simple — portraits on the front — and oddly non-statistical with thoughts from the person on the back. Most are football players, but some are players’ wives and others are celebrities who have a fondness for the game. One of those people, for example, is Muhammad Ali and you can see his Team NFL insert card (No. 1 in the set) above. The biggest draw of these back then? There was an autographed card guaranteed in every box.

For a simple Sunday item — call it a Sunday Six — here’s a look at six fun cards from the product.

Will “Catching Kelce” turn into collecting Kelce? Perhaps …

Travis-KelceKansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce will be the star of a reality TV show that revolves around his dating life — and, believe it or not, there’s a shot that it could spark added interest in his football cards.

E! Entertainment announced this week that it has eight episodes of Catching Kelce coming soon and in a story to deadline.com an E! executive described why the player was chosen.

“On top of being a well-respected athlete, Travis has a fun-loving, over the top personality that draws people to him,” E! executive vice president Jeff Olde said. “We are excited to give our viewers an up-close look at his search for love.”

So, why might this mean something for his football cards?

Buzz List: Eight NFL players to watch this weekend

WattThe NFL’s postseason kicks off with four games this weekend and it seems each of them have players to watch when it comes to collecting football cards.

Here’s one player from all eight teams Buzz says could be of interest — some obvious, some not.

Watt-PizzaJ.J. Watt — The Houston Texans’ defensive dynamo and part-time tight end is basically a household name with his bloody noses and his Papa John’s commercials, but when it comes to autographed Rookie Cards he might be overvalued. He’s one of very few defensive stars to really get attention when it comes to cards, so it would take a monster game against the Chiefs to make those Contenders Rookie Cards even better buys. Sorry for the bad news there. (Maybe him being able to successfully complete a pizza curl in a follow-up Papa John’s commercial would help?)

So, who gets the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award?

CooperThe biggest driver on football cards these days is the Rookie Card and now that the regular season is over most of those big-name newcomers are done for the year.

So, naturally, that makes us wonder who get the Rookie of the Year nod? We’ll focus on offense since it matters the most when it comes to cards. (On defense Buzz thinks it will probably go to Kansas City’s Marcus Peters, who tied for the NFL lead with eight interceptions and two TDs.)

But on offense it’s not as easy.

Chiefs RB Charcandrick West finally gets a Rookie Card next week

CharcandrickWestNobody really expected un-drafted Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Charcandrick West to do a whole lot in the NFL this season.

Why? Well, a four-time Pro Bowl selection Jamaal Charles was ahead of him on the depth chart — he of five 1,000-yard seasons in the last six years.

But then Oct. 11 happened.

Jeremy Langford, Antonio Brown & Adrian Peterson among NFL’s Buzz-worthy players in Week 10

2015-Certified-Jeremy-Langford-RCJeremy Langford might not be the Bears rookie that many thought would be stirring things up in Chicago, but in Week 10 he was just that with 20 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown as well as seven catches for 109 yards and a score. On the season, the fourth-rounder out of Michigan State has four rushing touchdowns and 225 yards — most of that in the last two weeks. when Matt Forte has been out due to injury. Could the Bears have a new option here on offense? Sure seems like it.
