Black November starts today and here are five sweet deals to consider

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices right now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com begins its Black November sales now.

Many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes/cases that caught this collector’s eye.

2015 Bowman’s Best baseball hobby box
There are more than a few Bowman boxes up for grabs with lower prices as part of this wave — the first of several to come between now and Black Friday — but this one has a pretty strong discount (limit eight boxes per person) and potential. The mini-box format allows you to share a box with someone else if you want, too, with each half-box including six packs and and two autos. Among the signers here? Carlos Correa, Kris Bryant, Dansby Swanson, Rafael Devers, Mike Trout, Andrew Benintendi, Bryce Harper, Byron Buxton and many others. You can do very well here with a little luck.

McGregor-Mayweather showdown could ignite new card battles, too

Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. — it’s one of those what-if fantasy battles from the magazines of old that’s coming true.

And with a pair of upcoming card releases there will be a battle on cardboard, too.

While we get to wait for the fight on Aug. 26 — one that should be a promotional and pop culture spectacle — we’re getting the first autographs for Mayweather soon to go with McGregor’s limited and pricey cardboard already on the market.

Does the slab make the card? It doesn’t hurt these (gallery + poll)

berra

Slabbed cards have been a part of the hobby for decades now but a few autograph companies have started getting into the trend in recent years by encasing cards to give them a bit better display presence at a fraction of the price for a signed photo or memorabilia piece.

And it helps that while storage and protection concern go away, too.

Two big autograph dealers — Steiner Sports and Fanatics Authentic — have pretty beefy runs of signed trading cards available that in some cases take the interesting creations of card companies and makes them better.

Buzz Poll: Win or lose at UFC 207, what’s next for Ronda Rousey?

rousey1

When Ronda Rousey enters the Octagon for UFC 207 on Friday night in Las Vegas it will have been one year, one month and 16 days since her career trajectory changed from unprecedented dominating badass with mainstream cameos everywhere to a rattled ex-champ with a 12-1-0 record.

Her cardboard is still arguably the hottest in the hobby — at least based on asking prices — but we all know it’s not the same as it had been when the steamroller got shocked. A win against Amanda Nunes might get the gravy train rolling back to its super-marketed hype levels — you know, something to justify all that super marketing that’s been done in her return.

But … what’s next for her cardboard if she loses again?

UFC 200’s wildcard Brock Lesnar has cards from several fields

Brock-Lesnar-NFLThe “Biggest, Baddest Card Ever” is how tonight’s UFC 200 is billed and it’s had its fair share of drama when it comes to the card itself.

And there’s plenty of cardboard to be found for it, too, with Topps on site for the UFC Expo with promo cards (though not as many as it had planned due to the Jon Jones-forced card change) and it will have even more cardboard with the launch of Topps Now UFC with this event.

But the one player on the card tonight in Las Vegas who doesn’t have any new cards — but should figure into the show prominently win or lose — is current WWE fighter Brock Lesnar, who is making a one-time (or is it?) return to the Octagon with his organization’s approval (or is it the sign of something more?) for the fight. (Update: Lesnar has been added to the Topps Now debut checklist after his win.)

He’s got plenty of cardboard.

Topps’ Kimbo Slice autographs a rare find — and one’s even rarer

kimbo-slice-2009-topps-UFC-TUFHe’s got just one certified autograph — but if you have it you may need another.

Kimbo Slice was a backyard brawler and YouTube enigma before he became a professional MMA fighter. He had a 5-2 record with Elite XC, UFC and Bellator but that limited time with UFC was enough to get him a single certified autograph card appearance.

The fighter, who died on Monday at age 42, signed a limited number of 2009 Topps UFC The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 cards. However, there’s a twist here.

NSCC signers: Whose autograph would you pick first?

Hideki-Matsui-autographThis year’s National Sports Collectors Convention is a couple of months away and thanks to its non-traditional location — Atlantic City, N.J. — there are perhaps a few more guests on tap that we’ve not expected to see at the annual show.

It’s been a long time since the show was last in New Jersey — it’s largely been located in the Midwest for most of the last decade — so regional autograph guests such as Hideki Matsui and countless others who wore pinstripes and starred for other teams in that area make sense. They’ll also help draw in locals who might not normally hit the show … just to get that ink.

Autograph ticket pricing for the show will come soon, but Buzz has picked seven top names that may not break the bank — one per sport — at the show.

Goldin Auctions item includes extra bit of MMA and hobby history from James “Lights Out” Toney

JamesToneyIt’s been more than five years since James “Lights Out” Toney set foot inside the Octagon at UFC 118 in Boston, but a piece of memorabilia from his fight against UFC legend Randy Couture is on the auction block beginning Monday via Goldin Auctions.

The piece? The former boxer’s trunks worn what was his only MMA bout — a first-round submission — and it’s extra Buzz-worthy because, well, look at it.

That’s a one-of-a-kind piece of hobby history — and there’s an extra nod to MMA collectors because among Toney’s sponsors for the fight was, if you haven’t figured it out, Blowout Cards.
