One 1992 Pro Line football card’s story includes three Super Bowl rings & four NFL team employees

If you’re a long-time reader of The Buzz, then you’ve seen this card before, but with the Super Bowl last night in Minneapolis there was a reason for it to hit The Buzz’s Twitter Machine, too.

It’s a 1992 Pro Line Profiles card for Hall of Famer Howie Long, and it was among the few tweets in an 11-hour marathon for Super Bowl LII last night simply because of the tree-climbing kid on the right.

Why? That’s Eagles defensive end Chris Long, who was roughly six years old at the time of this family portrait that made its way to cardboard — and that’s far from the only piece of trivia here.

If you’ve wanted to pull a Tom Brady Rookie Card, here’s your shot …

Even if Tom Brady doesn’t get his sixth Super Bowl ring on Sunday, his Rookie Cards from 2000 will remain the hottest cards in the hobby as it’s become abundantly clear that he’s The One to those who target the all-time elite on cardboard.

The biggest challenge to chasing Brady RCs isn’t really finding them — you can, but they’re not cheap — the biggest challenge of them all might be finding wax boxes where you can pull one yourself.

But we’ve got a shot for you to do it over on the main site.

PSA/DNA authenticates Super Bowl LII game-used footballs & more

When Tom Brady or Nick Foles touch a football for the first time on Sunday in Super Bowl LII, they won’t be the first to handle them.

Beyond game preparations and handling each ball for the biggest NFL game of the year will have been “tagged” by PSA/DNA with synthetic DNA ink. There are approximately 100 footballs prepped to be used at some point during the game and those aren’t the only items authenticated by the company, which has been doing this for the Super Bowl for more than a decade.

Tom Brady Super Bowl LI family ring hits auction block via Goldin

A Super Bowl LI ring issued to a member of Tom Brady‘s family is up for grabs right now via Goldin Auctions.

The size 10.5 world champions ring weighs 77.3 grams and is identical to the one issued to the quarterback who led his New England Patriots to a shocking come-from-behind overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons a year ago. It’s a 10 karat white-gold ring with 260 diamonds worked into the design.

It’s believed to be the first ring or award tied to Brady to be hit the open market, and bidding opened at $20,000 — and there’s already action with the bidding.

Danny Amendola Rookie Cards may be elusive with third Super Bowl ring

Just like on football cards, everybody’s attention seemed to be on Tom Brady Sunday evening in Gillette Stadium.

Now part of that was due to the drama about the gash on his hand held shut by some stitches, but we all know that the drama of him and the New England Patriots potentially reaching another Super Bowl and possibly getting a record-by-himself sixth Super Bowl ring was a big deal, too.

That Super Bowl trip is happening with a 24-20 come-from-behind victory, and that’s because of two fourth-quarter touchdown catches from Danny Amendola, who might have the toughest Rookie Card to find of all the Patriots.

Why?

Tom Brady may be the greatest in the history of the game but James White may have been the greatest in the game on Sunday night.

The New England Patriots RB scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime to cap a game here he caught 14 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown and rushed six times for 29 yards and two touchdowns.

That’s not bad, so naturally where can you find an autograph for third-year pro out of Wisconsin?

Tom Brady is the greatest … just take a look at his autograph prices

s-l1600

You probably have seen all of the on-field superlatives that add to the legacy of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and that debate that’s really not a debate at all.

If he wasn’t already (he was), his team’s overtime victory in Super Bowl LI solidified that status on Sunday night in Houston — but that’s not the only way that it’s obvious that he’s the best.

The easiest way to know is to look at his autograph fees … and, yes, he still signs.

Who are Super Bowl LI superstars worth collecting? Most are obvious …

brady-ryan

If you didn’t know, Super Bowl LI is on Sunday with the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots facing off for top honors in the NFL — something the Patriots have done four times and something the Falcons have come up short at grasping one previous time.

We all know the household names here and that list starts with the quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Matt Ryan, but we also should all know that this is one of those games where an unknown and cardless player could become a postseason legend like Malcolm Butler two years ago.

So, who else should be on the radar of football collectors already?

Postseason Superstars: This week’s icons include Antonio Brown, Aaron Rodgers & more … and who’s next?

AntonioBrown

Five catches, 124 years and two touchdowns.

That’s the final line for Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown in Sunday’s 30-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins in their playoff-opening game. At this point, it’s the kind of showing that we expect from one of the league’s elite who had 106 catches for 1,284 yards and 12 TDs this season.

His 2010 Rookie Cards show him fresh out of Central Michigan and can be found in more than 20 brands that season, including Absolute Memorabilia, Bowman Sterling, Certified, Classics, Crown Royale, Donruss Elite, Epix, Exquisite Collection, Limited, Gridiron Gear, Plates & Patches, Threads, Contenders, National Treasures, Prestige, Rookies & Stars, SP Authentic, SPx, Score and Sweet Spot. You can expect to pay top dollar for anything of him that’s relatively rare and his auto RCs (Exquisite, Plates & Patches, Contenders, National Treasures, SPA and SPx) will be even more volatile and in-demand. It just comes with the territory.

Sunday Superstars: Week 5 notables include Ezekiel Elliott, Tom Brady, T.Y. Hilton, Sammie Coates & more

elliott

While there might be a quarterback controversy brewing in The Big D, there’s no doubting who the top RB is for the Dallas Cowboys after a 30-17 win over the Dolphins on Sunday.

It’s Ezekiel Elliott and his 134-yard, two-touchdown day has cemented him as one of the front-runners among rookies this season — on a historic level, too.

According to Elias, his 546 rushing yards this season are the fifth-best total in NFL history for the first five games of a player’s career. The only better starts are Eric Dickerson (645 yards), Adrian Peterson (607), Todd Gurley (575) and Billy Sims (560). That’s not bad company — and that’s good news for Elliott’s cardboard given how Gurley looked last year.

New WWE signee is a former NFL draft pick … with just one card

Brennan-Williams

There’s a chance you’ll be seeing more of Brennan Williams on cardboard and on TV — but that’s potentially a long ways away.

And it probably won’t be with that name, either.

World Wrestling Entertainment announced a new signee for its developmental ranks on Monday and it’s Williams, who is a former third-round draft pick who spent time on the sidelines and the practice squad. He’ll join the NXT hopefuls at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Fla.

Buzz Poll: Now what for Deflategate’s main players?

Jimmy-GaroppoloUnless the Supreme Court opts to hear his case, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be suspended for the first four games of this season for his alleged role in the Deflategate scandal.

This puts the focus solely on Jimmy Garoppolo and the franchise in his hands. He’s a guy who has completed 20 of 31 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in 11 games over two seasons. As a recently drafted rookie found throughout 2014 brands, he’s got plenty of cardboard for collectors to speculate with and that got Buzz wondering what you guys thought …

Kevin Turner’s NFL legacy will reach far beyond any cards or statistics

Kevin-TurnerFormer NFL fullback Kevin Turner played just eight seasons as a pro, retiring from the game at age 30 in 1999, but his story and his efforts to help players suffering from health issues after retirement will resonate for years.

He died on Thursday at age 46 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The former New England Patriot and Philadelphia Eagle was one of the lead plaintiffs in the concussion lawsuit against the NFL that led to the billion-dollar 2013 settlement that was finally approved last year. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2010 and since then had worked with his foundation to help research and raise awareness.

Auction Gallery: Hunt’s Super Bowl 50 event packs serious history

watt395One of the biggest football auctions of the year is set for Friday and Saturday as Hunt Auctions continues its traditional Super Bowl sale.

The Super Bowl 50 Live Auction will be at the Moscone Center in San Francisco with more than 900 lots including modern-day game-dated memorabilia like the J.J. Watt Houston Texans gamer above — a jersey with a hefty price already in early bidding — and pieces from football’s early years. too.

Because of its high profile as part of the NFL Experience show, prices can be pretty strong once the auctions close.

Just look how far Tom Brady has come … and how bad the other 2000 NFL Draft quarterbacks were

TomBrady2000When Tom Brady takes the field against Peyton Manning today, the discussion about who’s the best will present itself for the umpteenth time.

Who’s No. 1? It’s a good argument on the field. It depends what you prefer — stats or rings. On cardboard, both are big, though Brady is definitely a pricier autograph simply because he doesn’t sign as much. Manning’s availability hurts values but helps collections. (Just like on the field, it’s a good debate of who’s better hobby-wise.)

Brady2000Rewind the clock back 16 years, though, and it was obvious who the star was between these two. Manning had been the No. 1 overall pick a couple years before and walked into the NFL a star on cardboard after his time at Tennessee. And Brady? He wasn’t even in the discussions. He was just this guy from Michigan. >>>>>

The former Wolverine was so off-the-radar that it took a few years for this image to become Internet fodder. Brady’s cards took a bit of time to take off, too, but once he took over as the Patriots’ starter in 2001, NFL history was changed — just like his cardboard.
