Buzz Poll: Will Tim Tebow ever play for Mets … and have baseball cards?

tebow-jetsFrom the New York Jets to the New York Mets.

tebow-metsThat’s the headline this morning as Tim Tebow has been signed by the Mets to a minor-league deal.

The 29-year-old hasn’t played baseball since high school and hasn’t taken a meaningful snap in the NFL since he was a Jet in 2012.

But, hey, now he’ll be eligible to appear on baseball cards. (The real question is how soon will they arrive?)

Justin Turner’s scarcity makes him an animal on baseball cards

Justin-Turner-Animal

He’s in his eighth season as a big-leaguer but Justin Turner has finally become a bit of an animal at the plate with a career-high 23 homers and 72 RBI (so far) this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He’s been a mainstay at third base for the team the last couple of seasons and with his emerging presence he’s attracted some fans — or do we call them promotional buddies? — along the way, which probably has helped get him on the radar of a few more.

There’s one problem, though. When it comes to cardboard, he’s a bit of a rare breed — and that’s translated into some cash for some collectors who have found and sold.

The New York Mets catcher and Hall of Famer’s helmet will be sold via Goldin Auctions with 50 percent of the buyer’s premium headed to a New York-based charity, Tuesday’s Children, which supports first-responders and their families.

“We are very lucky to have the opportunity to share such an important piece of baseball history and at the same time support the worthwhile work of this wonderful organization that supports those affected by the events of Sept. 11,” said Ken Goldin, the founder of Goldin Auctions. “Similar to Piazza’s jersey from that night, this helmet will forever connect fans to one of the most memorable moments in Mets history. Those who were lucky enough to be there, or view it on television will never forget it.”

Buzz List: Nine autographs to find in 2013 & 2014 Elite Extra Edition boxes

Elite-Extra-Edition-logoCountless collectors call themselves prospectors, and that particular focus is one that can lead to a lot of pack-ripping or a lot of secondary market purchases with future flips in mind.

One brand that’s got many of those coveted newcomer names year after year is Elite Extra Edition, which is Panini America‘s foilboard-focused prospecting brand that typically packs one of the deepest checklists and, with Hot Boxes, some of the highest autograph totals in the hobby.

While the dust isn’t yet settling on the recently released newest edition of the brand, Buzz decided to take a look back at nine names who you should know from the previous two editions (2013 and 2014) and see how they did last season. Why? There are inevitably some bargains to be had if you consider this brand and these guys (along with countless other players that may not yet be on the radars of too many prospectors) given box prices these days. After all, old wax can still be good wax if the price is right.

Does getting a 1/1 autographed yourself hurt the card’s appeal?

MatzinkOne Blowout member did something unconventional by most collectors’ standards and has sparked an interesting debate about collecting over on the forum.

He got his 2015 Bowman Chrome Mini Superfractor of Steven Matz autographed in-person. It’s since been JSA certified, yet he asks the question “Did I ruin this card?”

In a poll on the site, 55 percent of those who answered said it looks awesome but he killed the value of the card. Just 30 percent said it was a good idea and the rest say he ruined it.

Minor League Baseball’s career home run leader retires with more cardboard than you might expect

HessmanHe’s a real-life Crash Davis and just like the big-screen journeyman the career of former big-leaguer Mike Hessman is over.

If you don’t know Hessman, it’s OK — you’re probably like most of us. You might have one of his baseball cards long forgotten in a box somewhere — from back in the days when he was a rookie for the Atlanta Braves and a guy who finally got his shot after eight seasons in the minor leagues.

That was back in 2003, but he’s still in the news now.

Will Eric Hosmer’s hustle lead to hobby gold? + 5 more Royals to know

hosmerGold

The Kansas City Royals are your World Series champions with a cast of younger veteran players who have all-around skills but perhaps not one overall superstar who is a hobby darling.

2015WorldSeriesLogoBut thanks to Eric Hosmer‘s hustle on a ground ball in the ninth to tie it and a five-run rally in the 12th, the Royals wear the crown this year in MLB.

Hosmer has arguably the most potential in the hobby with a good amount of 2008 USA Baseball and other prospect cards predating his MLB card arrivals in 2011. Overall, he has more than 1,500 unique cards and more than 300 certified autographs for collectors to chase. They’re not overly plentiful like some stars from that timeframe, but they are out there. If you can’t land some of his USA ink, look for the affordable autos in 2008 Razor Signature Series. He’s there because he was a Razor exclusive before his Topps autos arrived in 2011.

Jacob deGrom has a cardboard edge besides The Big Apple, big hair

deGrom2014ToppsHeritageRewind to a year ago and New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was one of the hottest autographs in the hobby simply because of one thing.

This year, the big-haired right-hander in The Big Apple is working his way toward a potential World Series appearance with his Mets, building upon his 14-8 campaign as the reigning NL Rookie of the Year.
