Michael Phelps, Simone Biles & Katie Ledecky share newest SI cover

si-olympics-cover-the-greatests-jpgToday is Sports Illustrated‘s birthday — the first issue arrived today back in 1954 with baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews on the cover — but since we’re in the here and now there’s still a relatively collectable news nugget today.

Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps and Simone Biles share the latest cover along wth their medal haul as of a few days ago, giving Olympic collectors something new to chase.

In case you missed it here on The Buzz, we’ve recapped how Ledecky has little cardboard, how Phelps has plenty of certified autographs and how Biles and her “Final Five” teammates have been heating up on cardboard.

The SI cover will be one of note for autograph collectors wanting something beyond a card or photo and it’s an affordable option for a simple piece of Olympic memorabilia highlighting three of the nation’s biggest stars so far in the Rio Olympics. It’s Phelps’ 13th SI cover appearance.

Katie Ledecky’s dominance isn’t seen on much official cardboard

Katie-Ledecky-SI-Kids-1Katie Ledecky has five Olympic medals in the Rio Games and four of them are gold — it’s a pretty good haul for a 19-year-old.

The one thing she doesn’t have, though? A bonafide pack-inserted trading card.

Instead, collectors have a trio of Sports Illustrated for Kids cards — a staple for the non-traditional sports or young stars not yet professionals found in the pages of the kids magazine as a perforated-sheet bonus. It’s a place where LeBron James, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods have made their marks in the past along with many others before traditional card appearances.

Michael Phelps’ medal count won’t near his certified autograph total

Michael-Phelps-2016-insert-goldAfter another ridiculously dominating run in the pool last night, Michael Phelps claimed the 22nd Olympic gold medal of his career and ran up his medal collection to 26.

It’s a mark that’s not likely to be touched — but it’s also a mark that can’t compare to his number of certified autographs.

Although he’s a pricey signature, he’s one of the most-prolific Olympians when it comes to autographed cards.

Marquise Goodwin chases his Olympic dreams

Marquise-Goodwin-2013-Panini-National-TreasuresYou might have a new reason to go digging through your 2013 football cards after today’s U.S. Olympic track & field trials in Eugene, Ore.

Why? Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin is one step closer to making the U.S. Olympic team in the long jump. Could it spark new interest in the Rookie Cards of this 25-year-old who has recorded just three catches for 66 yards in the last two seasons while also working on special teams?

Maybe, but many might not know that he’s actually been there before.

Jim Craig “Miracle on Ice” auction heating up as close nears

ImageThe auction for Jim Craig‘s memorabilia from the epic 1980 “Miracle on Ice” game is winding down, but the prices are definitely on the rise before the sale closes on Friday evening.

How hot? Three items from the Lelands.com sale have topped the $190,000 mark so far with his Olympic gold medal leading the way at $259,374.25 after 11 bids.

It’s also quite possible that other items from the 17-piece collection could reach into six-figures.

UFC star Ronda Rousey leads long list of athletes in SI Swimsuit Issue — and many can be found on cards

SI-Ronda-RouseyIt’s February and that means that we’re set for the Super Bowl and some mass-marketing from SI.com over the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

And in reality the hype for both already has begun.

SI-Kate-UptonThe last time we saw Ronda Rousey, she was suffering the first loss of her UFC career. Up next she’ll be in the annual issue for the second year in a row. More publicity won’t hurt her already-in-high-demand cardboard. She’s one of a long list of athletes to appear in the issue and part of an even longer list of models who appear on cards and have certified autographs and even memorabilia cards for collectors to chase.

For the traditional models, there actually were SI Swimsuit card sets released each year from 2003 to 2009 from Stellar Collectibles and then a later retrospective set. In those sets, we got autographs, memorabilia cards and even paint cards from photoshoots. Meanwhile, for many of the athletes who have appeared in the issue since, there are autograph appearances in sets like Topps’ Allen & Ginter (and many other sets) where collectors can also sometimes find the models. Kate Upton and Chrissy Teigen have been found there for example, and they sell very well.

Here’s a rundown of a few sports stars who we’ve seen in the issue.
