Sometimes you just get sidetracked by an email.
That was the case Friday morning when the latest images from Sideshow Toys spotlighting its newest (and some past) Premium Format figures arrived in Buzz’s inbox.
They’re premium in size — in the case of Deadpool here 24 inches tall and 14 pounds — and premium in price. But, most importantly, they’re premium in appeal as they are ridiculously detailed in their varying forms.
If you’re like Buzz, you’ve probably seen Funko‘s ReAction figures in chain stores and marveled at some of the quirky inclusions in the various lines.
It’s an ongoing series of 3.75-inch figures in a distinct style reminiscent of Kenner‘s original Star Wars toys right down to the line’s logo and the clamshell packaging.
The difference, though?
It’s a trend that’s been growing for the last decade, but there are probably more than a few collectors who have walked right by them in the card aisle at retail stores not realizing what can be had inside packs.
They’re generally known as blind-wrapped mystery toys — a small vinyl figure inside a box or mylar pouch. They’re something that’s been popular in Japan for a long time, but have taken off in the United States for the last decade.
Think of them as one part coin vending machine, one part toy and one part sports card.
Oh, and they can be one part fun.
