One 1992 Pro Line football card’s story includes three Super Bowl rings & four NFL team employees

If you’re a long-time reader of The Buzz, then you’ve seen this card before, but with the Super Bowl last night in Minneapolis there was a reason for it to hit The Buzz’s Twitter Machine, too.

It’s a 1992 Pro Line Profiles card for Hall of Famer Howie Long, and it was among the few tweets in an 11-hour marathon for Super Bowl LII last night simply because of the tree-climbing kid on the right.

Why? That’s Eagles defensive end Chris Long, who was roughly six years old at the time of this family portrait that made its way to cardboard — and that’s far from the only piece of trivia here.

Football world loses a legend as Hall of Famer Y.A. Tittle dies at age 90

A Pro Football Hall of Famer known for plenty of production during a legendary career, never winning the big one and being the subject of an iconic piece of American sports photography has died.

He’s NFL and LSU legend Y.A. Tittle. He was 90 years old.

When he retired at age 38 in 1962 after a 17-year career with the Colts, 49ers and Giants, he was the NFL’s career leader in passing touchdowns and yards. The two-time MVP racked up more than 33,000 yards and 242 touchdowns — marks that still rank 35th and 25th in league history despite massive changes in the game since then. His 36 touchdown passes in 1963 were a league record until it was topped by Dan Marino in 1984.

This new Ken Stabler Hall of Fame gem from Panini America wouldn’t exist without sticker autographs

Collectors often bemoan the use of sticker autographs, but there are times where their use can create some cardboard that otherwise could not exist.

The card above is one of those times.

It’s a 2017 Panini Absolute Football Hall of Fame Jersey Signatures card of Ken Stabler and just 49 copies of this one will arrive in packs of Absolute Football beginning next week. It notes Snake’s Hall of Fame status (he was inducted last summer) and it includes a piece of a game-used jersey as well as his signature.

Why is this card special?

Many Football Hall of Fame finalists represent college powerhouses, but not all have a lot of college cards

StablerWe’re a day away from the Pro Football Hall of Fame revealing its 2016 class of inductees, and there’s been plenty said about a group that includes Brett Favre, Ken Stabler, Terrell Davis, Terrell Owens and other finalists as the hours click down to Saturday night.

And that’s when there will be even more said.

But Buzz was wondering about college ties for the big names this year and noticed something else — many of the candidates come from big schools with a number of Hall of Famers already enshrined. That got Buzz thinking about which schools have the most players in Canton — and whether this year’s class might shake things up in the record book.

Five collectable NFL stars deserving of Hall of Fame status

Pro_Football_HOF_LogoThe Pro Football Hall of Fame is an odd one in terms of who gets in and who doesn’t — many memorable names from the past have yet to make the cut and many who do you might not know because of the positions they played and their relative lack of cardboard.

Part of that’s on the hobby, but part of that is on the voters.

Buzz briskly scoured the record books to select five players who you probably have in your collections who aren’t in Canton. Check ’em out …
