JFK files may prompt plenty of new chatter, but no matter what there’s a ton of Kennedy cardboard to collect

Today’s highly anticipated release of the JFK files — the previously classified documents regarding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 — are sure to be a holiday of sorts for conspiracy theorists and are sure to pique the curiosity of history buffs and presidential-minded people.

But the life of the 35th president has prompted plenty of cardboard appearances over the years, too, far beyond just the tragedy of that November day in Dallas, Texas.

Topps Heritage master set run — and two 2009 proof sheets — hits market via Robert Edward Auctions

A run of Topps Heritage near master sets — in this case every single card in the product — for the first decade of the popular brand as well as a pair of autograph proof sheets featuring cards that were never produced have hit the auction block via Robert Edward Auctions.

The run begins with the first Heritage set from 2001 — a product among a few celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary that year, and one that offered us a re-do of the iconic 1952 Topps set but with today’s stars and nods to the past — and runs to 2011 when Heritage hit the memorable wood-bordered 1962 Topps design.

Gallery & short-print basics: 2017 Topps Heritage baseball cards

ichiro-pitcher

Our annual trip back in time officially arrives on Wednesday as 2017 Topps Heritage hits once again with a look back at the burlap design of 1968 Topps using today’s stars.

Part of that package will be variations that are based on errors and variations from the original set that it seeks to replicate (at least in part) and we’ll get to those right here as they arrive.

For now, though, our gallery here will include looks at the basics and other fun finds as they arrive — and they have started to show up from Topps and they’ll be hitting eBay auctions via retail breaks at any time now.

Black November Wave 9 is here — and here are five deals to consider

2016pnclassicsfb

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com’s Black November Wave 9 hits today.

Many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes that caught this collector’s eye.

2016-panini-classics-football-auto-gallery-292016 Panini Classics football hobby box
Just because it’s not expensive doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the best releases of the year so far — and if you ask this collector Classics is a contender for just that. You’ll find one autograph per box and memorabilia cards atop the ink in others. There also is one buyback auto per 20-box case with some big names to be found. This one’s retro-styled but brand-new design (with a nod to 1983 Topps) is strong with some quirky variations and touches that also add to the oldschool feel. You can see more of those and a gallery in past Buzz stories here. Aside from the hits, the printing quality and design here on retro stock make this a fun rip no matter what. Had Buzz not jumped on some cases in Black November previously, this would be in the ol’ cart.

Mookie Betts’ homers keep piling up & keep sparking demand for cards

Mookie-BettsThis Red Sox slugger has been in some elite company this season and his cardboard continues to pick up momentum.

His name is Mookie Betts and he smacked another homer — a three-run shot — last night in Baltimore to up his season total to 28. That comes off the heels of a three-homer game Sunday that put him side-by-side with Ted Williams as the only Red Sox players with a pair of three-homer games in the same season.

It’s sparked a wave of Topps Now cards — and pricey Relics that sold out near-instantly — but it’s not the only cardboard that Betts has that’s now in more demand.

Let’s revisit 1967 Topps errors for a 2016 Topps Heritage variation primer

2016-Topps-Heritage-StantonWe’re less than a month away from the release of 2016 Topps Heritage baseball cards, the annual trek to the past that includes errors and variations as an added homage to the past year within the new product.

In advance of the March 2 release, Buzz was wondering about which mistakes are found in the 1967 Topps set — that’s this year’s throwback model — and what might be found. We don’t yet have a checklist from Topps for this year, but that will be telling. Why? Stars from the past teams will often match stars on present teams in the set if an error/correction is in play.

Here’s a rundown of the mistakes found in 1967 Topps …
