Board Buzz: Must-read threads on the Blowout Forums (Feb. 8)

The Blowout Cards Forums are where thousands of collectors converge daily to discuss, well, a little bit of everything. Here are a few threads about collecting and more that you should check out right now.

What’s Buzzing Today: Nothing but impressive pulls — including a decade-old Tom Brady 1/1 — in today’s edition.

If you’ve wanted to pull a Tom Brady Rookie Card, here’s your shot …

Even if Tom Brady doesn’t get his sixth Super Bowl ring on Sunday, his Rookie Cards from 2000 will remain the hottest cards in the hobby as it’s become abundantly clear that he’s The One to those who target the all-time elite on cardboard.

The biggest challenge to chasing Brady RCs isn’t really finding them — you can, but they’re not cheap — the biggest challenge of them all might be finding wax boxes where you can pull one yourself.

But we’ve got a shot for you to do it over on the main site.

Boston Celtics and NBA lose legend as Jo Jo White dies at 71

One of the NBA’s greatest teams has lost one of its greats.

Hall of Famer Jo Jo White who won two championship rings and was the NBA Finals MVP in 1976 as part of a 12-year career with the Celtics, Warriors and Kings has died after battling several health issues for years. He was 71.

“He was a champion and a gentleman; supremely talented and brilliant on the court, and endlessly gracious off of it,” the Boston Celtics said in a statement. “His contributions to the team’s championship legacy may have only been surpassed by the deep and lasting impact that he had in the community. The thoughts and sympathies of the entire Celtics organization are with the White family.”

Million Dollar Arm’s Rinku Singh starts WWE career today

You may be seeing Rinku Singh on cardboard once again.

Back in 2009, he was one of two pitchers signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Lucknow, India, and their stories of how that happened ended up becoming a Disney movie. But today he joins professional wrestling hopefuls under contract at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Fla.

No, seriously.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban’s historic title chase could spark new interest in already hot autographs

With a victory tonight, University of Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban would equal a giant not only in the history of college football but a giant in his school’s history.

His Crimson Tide plays in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Paul W. Bryant Drive down the road from the Paul W. Bryant Museum and the Bryant Conference Center — all reminders of Bear Bryant and his NCAA-record six national championships and 323 career victories. (Saban is at 285.)

Tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship is Saban’s sixth title-game appearance in the last nine years and with a win he’ll have his sixth season title for his career. Saban had his chance at tying Bryant last season when his undefeated team lost in the final seconds on the final play of the game against Clemson, which Alabama knocked off in a rematch this year to advance to tonight’s game against the Georgia Bulldogs. Both of Alabama’s postseason foes this year are coached by former Tide assistants, Dabo Swinney at Clemson and Kirby Smart at Georgia, but neither has autographs and football card appearances as easily found as the legend of today, Saban.

Jon Gruden’s signature will get him big, big money soon from Raiders

Jon Gruden‘s return to the Oakland Raiders looks to be a pricey one when it comes next week — a mere 10-year contract worth close to $100 million.

One thing the former coach turned analyst turned coach again might not be doing anytime soon after signing that massive deal, though, is signing autographs for card companies — but thankfully for collectors he’s already got a heavy volume of ink out there (at least for a coach) from more than a decade ago if they want one.

JFK files may prompt plenty of new chatter, but no matter what there’s a ton of Kennedy cardboard to collect

Today’s highly anticipated release of the JFK files — the previously classified documents regarding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 — are sure to be a holiday of sorts for conspiracy theorists and are sure to pique the curiosity of history buffs and presidential-minded people.

But the life of the 35th president has prompted plenty of cardboard appearances over the years, too, far beyond just the tragedy of that November day in Dallas, Texas.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s freaky start shouldn’t be too surprising

“Giannis Antetokounmpo: The night the legend was born”

“This is just the beginning”

“‘He really could be anything’ — Giannis Antetokounmpo is about to take over the NBA”

Those were just some of the headlines about, if you haven’t figured it out, Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks forward who has lit up the NBA in the first week of a new season with 38.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Breaking down the first week of the season, SI.com noted that “The Freak” is not like others on its list of 12 biggest surprises so far.

“Some of the trends on this list will soon disappear,” reads Rob Mahoney’s piece. “This is real — a fledgling MVP candidacy behind one of basketball’s transcendent talents.”

Keep reading for the basics on this potential MVP’s cardboard after his career-high 44-point game this weekend.

Jerry Jones making rare autograph card appearance for Panini America

If you watch a Dallas Cowboys game, odds are you’ll see him at least once — typically after a win or some kind of replay that generated a reaction from the owner’s box high above the 50-yard line.

But one thing where Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn’t often found is in packs of NFL cards but Panini America has a new rarity coming soon showing him as one of the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Buzz Poll: How does Tiger Woods’ news affect your collection?

Tiger Woods is back in the news again — and it’s not for golf.

Naturally with this development, along with his lack of time on the PGA Tour, one has to ponder the future of his cardboard. As one of the most-decorated and sought-after golf stars of all time, there’s been plenty of money put into his cardboard. He’s definitely also been one of the most sought-after autographs of anyone in the sports world … but now this.

More than a few questions come to mind … tell us what you think with our poll below or via a comment here or on Twitter.
