Black November Wave 5 is here … and here are five deals to consider

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices right now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com is in the midst its Black November sales now.

Wave 5 is here and many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes/cases that caught this collector’s eye. (And this wave was so big that there could easily be five more … check it out.)

2016 Panini Absolute Football retail Premium Box
At this sale price, this one is definitely worth checking out since last year’s rookie crop is stacked and this one includes two exclusive hits — one blue auto and one blue memorabilia card — in every box. This one is a simple retail take on a memorabilia-focused favorite of mine and there could be even more retail-only colors found in boxes, too. If those are big names such as Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott — or any of the other newcomers that are making a mark — you’re way ahead with this price. Either way, it’s a fun rip — and you can grab it by the case, too.

Keep reading for a few more picks among this newest wave.

Pondering what’s possible in a 1973 Topps baseball group break — and you can win one of five free spots

1973-Topps-boxWhat you see here is a 1973 Topps wax box — 24 packs of 10 cards — with cards inside just as they were wrapped in wax paper more than 40 years ago.

blowoutTVlogo09They’ll all see the light of day soon as part of an upcoming BlowoutTV group break, which will give collectors a shot at high-grade copies of Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt‘s Rookie Card along with RCs of Rich “Goose” Gossage, Dwight Evans, Davey Lopes and Bob Boone. (Oh, and keep reading to see how you can get in on a free spot in the break …)

And then, of course, there are cards of Hall of Famers and notables such as Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Al Kaline, Willie Mays, Pete Rose, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Harmon Killebrew, Joe Morgan and many more. Perfect specimens aren’t a given with the printing, cutting and packaging of the past, but a box like this one can yield plenty of high-dollar cards in PSA 9 and 10 form. (And some strong cards in lesser grades.)

But the real power in this one beyond the Hall of Famers? The potential for PSA 10 commons — cards that are often overlooked raw but can command insane amounts when PSA Registry collectors chase a set in high grade. How about $739.76 for a PSA 10 Bobby Murcer?

There’s some Power of the Pinstripes in play there, but that card is not alone.

On Friday night, Metallica played “Happy Birthday” for Willie Mays — tonight their guitars can be yours

Metallica-giants-5A pair of guitars are heating things up on the auction block — but not where you might expect.

They can be found on MLB Auctions.

One of the headlines from Friday read, “Metallica serenades Willie Mays during San Francisco Giants’ 4th-annual Metallica Night” — an event where members of the Bay Area band played “Happy Birthday” for Mays (he turned 85 yesterday) and played the national anthem before the game. Their equipment from that night is being auctioned for charity.

Just For Fun: Can you identify which years these vintage baseball card photographs were used?

MantleWhen someone says “1952 Topps Mickey Mantle” there’s simply one image that comes to mind for collectors — the image of the Oklahoma-born slugger looking over his right shoulder where his Louisville Slugger resides.

The blue hues and the yellow bat — the results of colorized images back in those days — are dramatically different than what we often expect from the cardboard of today, yet they are the basis of everything, too.

Seeing one of these memorable card images recently got Buzz wondering whether fellow collectors would be able to identify photographs from memorable vintage baseball card sets — but without the accoutrement that make 1952 look like 1952 or 1965 look like 1965.
