Unique Mickey Mantle autograph among cool items in Steiner auction

mantfos000000-2_medSometimes they just want a unique autograph.

Some vintage collectors out there may have a little bit of everything, which leaves them searching for unique pieces once they have all of the basics from when a past player was on the field. Sure, there are countless new cardboard creations for icons like Mickey Mantle, but this piece on the auction block from Steiner Sports is a bit different than the typical Mantle autograph.

It’s a signed official NFL football and it’s billed as “truly one of a kind” by Steiner. (It might not be but it’s certainly not common.) It’s one of several pieces available in its Winter Classic Auction, which runs for the next five days.

This unique piece already has attracted 16 bids after an opener of $500 and presently sits at $2,796. Why? Probably because it’s a compelling talking piece. Mantle’s inscription notes his zero touchdowns, but a little creativity at an autograph signing back in the day is paying off now.

It’s not alone in that Mantle definitely signed some unique inscriptions at times in the past — some with chuckle-worthy obscenities — but it’s definitely not the kind of Mantle autograph you see every day. This piece is authenticated by JSA and is estimated to sell for as much as $10,000.

Among the truly notable auction baseball items up for grabs as part of this auction are a Ted Williams game-used glove, a letter from Cy Young to Walter Johnson, a Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig autographed baseball and items from Yogi Berra‘s collection, which includes World Series rings. However, those are far from the only things of note up for grabs among more than 1,600 lots in the auction. You can see all of the auction items here.
