When’s an NBA game program different? Steiner Auctions knows …

This probably looks like many other NBA game programs from the late 1970s and early 1980s but it’s very different than other simple pieces of memorabilia picked up at a game from the past.

It’s from a Washington Bullets game — the cover showcases the visiting team in this case — played on Oct. 26, 1984, and it’s on the block now via Steiner Auctions.

Panini acknowledges error on three National Treasures patch cards

Three legendary cards in 2016 Panini National Treasures have a mistake — and Panini America will fix them for a collector who finds one.

One is a NFL Gear Quads Laundry Tag of four legendary quarterbacks — Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Tom Brady and John Elway. The mistake occurred during production as the card’s labeling should indicate that some of the players’ tags are from player-used and not game-worn jerseys.

“We are disappointed the error occurred, but it was truly an honest mistake with no intention of trying to mislead our customers,” reads a statement from the company. “All other parallel levels of these cards do contain game-worn material, and this mistake occurred because the laundry tag reservations from the player-worn jerseys were missed when routing the cards for approval. Obviously, this is something that we will be more diligent about in the future.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s autograph isn’t hard to land after retirement news

Dale Earnhardt Jr. — NASCAR’s most-popular driver — will be retiring after this season ends.

The 42-year-old shared his plans with his team today and a news conference is set for this afternoon to talk about his decision after 18 seasons as a driver at NASCAR’s highest level and more than 600 races.

The move shouldn’t come as a big surprise as he was sidelined with concussion issues for much of last season but that didn’t stop him from winning NASCAR’s most-popular driver award voting for the 14th straight year — the record for total wins is 16.

MLB’s founding documents will hit auction block via SCP next month

MLB‘s founding documents are hitting the auction block this spring as SCP Auctions is handling yet another historic sale.

This time, it’s a 74-page hand-written artifact — the original constitution of The National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs — that outlines its objectives. Among them are to “encourage, foster and elevate the game of baseball, enact and enforce proper rules for the exhibition and conduct of the game, to make baseball playing respectable and honorable, to protect and promote the mutual interests of professional baseball clubs and professional baseball players and to establish and regulate the ‘Baseball Championship of the United States.'”

This follows the sale of the 1857 “Laws of Base Ball” for $3.26 million one year ago today by the Laguna Niguel, Calif.-based company

Martin Luther King Jr. speech manuscript hits auction block

Update: The auction ended at $382,500.

A 20-page typed speech with hand-written notes by Martin Luther King Jr. is on the auction block.

The speech was delivered on July 6, 1965, in Chicago and included what is believed to be King’s first public statement of a phrase that became known very well as part of the civil rights movement, “we shall overcome.” In fact, that famous phrase ends the speech and is hand-written as part of a one-page addition to the prepared comments, which have been collected and bound.

Although it is not signed, the book is expected to sell for more than $500,000 via Goldin Auctions, which notes that other original past King speech manuscripts “have been appraised in the millions” and that the owner of the “I Have a Dream” speech has turned down $5 million.

Happy Days’ Erin Moran signed plenty of autographs in recent years

Happy Days star Erin Moran — aka Joanie Cunningham — died on Saturday leaving behind plenty of questions as part of a mysterious tale of what went wrong in her years away from Hollywood. She was 56.

Unlike many TV stars from the past, she signed plenty of autographs for card companies that collectors can find perhaps more easily in than some of her regular cardboard and it all came in the last decade of cardboard that saw a boom in non-sports releases.
