Celebrity autographs just might be easier to find than you think

When it comes to autographs in the sports world, there are plenty of ways that collectors and the autograph industry itself has helped commodify ink.

In other words, there are a number of common items that are commonly signed that help us all figure a common value that we’d expect to pay or expect to get if we have to sell something we own. Jerseys, balls, helmets, cards, photos — there are a lot of ways to collect sports autographs.

But for celebrity autographs, it’s a lot less complicated as the 8-by-10 photo is arguably the most-commonly solid piece across the whole spectrum of television, movies and others of note who we might find, say, at a comic book convention or other similarly organized signing session. Not all films have massive toy lines, not all celebs have book deals and TV shows often don’t have posters you can find all that easily.

Missing nameplates & missing black plates part of Gypsy Queen’s quirks

Topps‘ revamped take on a retro-styled staple officially arrives on Wednesday and it includes a few types of parallels and/or variations for collectors to hunt for.

One of them in 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen? Nameless cards, aka missing nameplate cards. They’re found one per hobby box at one in every 21 packs and if it’s one of the short-print cards (Nos. 301-320) with this feature then the odds are a much steeper one in every 315 packs.

Simply enough, they are missing the nameplate on the fronts of the design, but they aren’t the only ones with what printing people would call “plate” issues.

Patti Lapel brings movie & sports icons to world of collectable pins

In some areas of the sports world, pin collecting is a big deal and has been that way for decades.

Its name? Patti Lapel.

It’s National Puppy Day? There’s plenty of canine cardboard for that …

Today is National Puppy Day and for card collectors there are countless options if they want their collections to go to the dogs.

From one brand alone there are Pawtographs, Relics and plenty of inserts — and that’s just one of them as all kinds of things have made their way into packs in the last 20 years (and unusual non-sports sets were the norm in tobacco packs of the 1800s and later years).

That brand? It’s ToppsAllen & Ginter, which has included canine cardboard since its debut in 2006 when it included cards and paw-print Pawtographs from Ch. Felicity’s Diamond Jim, an English Springer Spaniel who won Best in Show honors at the 2007 Westminster Dog Show. In 2010 the brand included cards and Relics for Rory, who was “America’s Most-talented Dog” — a three-time disc dog world champion who dazzled with his skills. (The memorabilia is a piece of a used frisbee.)

But a simpler option for collectors? That came in 2012.
