Keith Jackson’s decades in game didn’t spawn much cardboard

One of the most-memorable voices in college football — if not all of broadcasting — has gone silent as Keith Jackson has died. He was 89.

His career started in the 1950s and he continued working until the mid-2000s with his “Whoa, Nellie!” catch-phrase heard countless times calling 15 Rose Bowls and plenty more during a stretch for ABC that began broadcasting college games in 1966. Jackson also called World Series games, Olympic events and worked on the Monday Night Football broadcast team.

And that’s where his perhaps only standard football card comes into play.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban’s historic title chase could spark new interest in already hot autographs

With a victory tonight, University of Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban would equal a giant not only in the history of college football but a giant in his school’s history.

His Crimson Tide plays in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Paul W. Bryant Drive down the road from the Paul W. Bryant Museum and the Bryant Conference Center — all reminders of Bear Bryant and his NCAA-record six national championships and 323 career victories. (Saban is at 285.)

Tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship is Saban’s sixth title-game appearance in the last nine years and with a win he’ll have his sixth season title for his career. Saban had his chance at tying Bryant last season when his undefeated team lost in the final seconds on the final play of the game against Clemson, which Alabama knocked off in a rematch this year to advance to tonight’s game against the Georgia Bulldogs. Both of Alabama’s postseason foes this year are coached by former Tide assistants, Dabo Swinney at Clemson and Kirby Smart at Georgia, but neither has autographs and football card appearances as easily found as the legend of today, Saban.

Bargain Buzz: Scouting the Blowout Black Friday Doorbusters

Byron “Whizzer” White’s cardboard options aren’t all that supreme

If you happened to turn on a cable news network Tuesday afternoon and see the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, you may have seen a weird discussion with Texas Senator Ted Cruz that had nothing to do with politics.

It had plenty to do with basketball — and the skills of a former associate justice of the Supreme Court, Byron White, who was appointed to the court in 1962 and was there until 1993.

Apparently he was known for his elbows and odd free-throws — and what was mentioned in passing as part of this off-topic discussion? The NFL.
