Topps revealed its newest non-sports product on Monday, 2017 Topps Warcraft — and it’s a hits-only, online-only affair that documents characters from the 2016 film.
Originally teased back in December 2015 as a full product before it was scrapped in May 2016, many of the pieces had clearly been put together for this one and collectors get to reap the benefits.
If you’re a certain age, you may remember Little Golden Books, which are beginning readers’ first licks at the literary world.
They’ve been around since the 1940s — and are still around today — but one illustrator has created a new take on these stories with a series of prints and a book that collects his past works all in one.
His name is Joey Spiotto and the Los Angeles-based artist is big on Storytime.
In some areas of the sports world, pin collecting is a big deal and has been that way for decades.
Olympic pins, press pins and other areas of collecting in this wearable genre — one that’s arguably bigger away from sports — can all carry some flair within their pieces, but none of them are like one artist’s line of pins showing pop culture icons and carrying nods to sports personalities.
Its name? Patti Lapel.
We don’t have all of the details yet, but one of the most-popular video games of the 1980s is getting full artistic honors with a tribute show launching tonight via a Los Angeles gallery.
The game is Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and the locale is Gallery1988.
It’s the latest show with ties to pop culture and the sports world at the venue and this time it’s several artists taking on the battles of Little Mac — and those are items that could be in big demand from fans and collectors.
It’s a simple idea that could have big-time appeal.
The idea? Video game box covers as canvas art prints — and a selection of four iconic Nintendo video games from the 1980s can be yours now for a relatively small price via ThinkGeek.com.
The memorable characters from Street Fighter II are greeting another cult icon of the 1980s, M.U.S.C.L.E. toys.
The first wave includes four three-packs of figures with Ryu, M. Bison, Vega, Ken, Dhalsim, Balrog, Blanka, Guile, Sagat, Chun-Li, Zangief and E. Honda.
These toys, which are available from Super7, aren’t the lone new M.U.S.C.L.E. creations available, either.
It’s all your fault, Nintendo.
The hottest (though seemingly non-existent) toy of the holiday season has been without question the NES Classic, a miniature modern-day version of the old Nintendo Entertainment System pre-loaded with 30 different games from the heyday of the 8-bit platform.
Buzz knew this would be big the day it was revealed months ago and I’ve checked chain stores multiple times a week in the time since its arrival last month seeking that Shangri-La Shelf where the Classic sat at its posted price of $59.99 — not the massive amounts more allegedly being paid on eBay. (Sure, some of those “sales” aren’t legit — many of them in fact — but some of the lesser high-priced sales wouldn’t shock me since I’m sure the NES Classic has caused angst for other people out there.)
There was a side effect after all this aisle-walking and checking out video games like I hadn’t done in years, if ever. It made me do something I never would have predicted months ago.
A little-known Nintendo game then is a well-known Nintendo game now — at least to serious collectors who are known to fork over plenty of cash for it.
It’s Stadium Events, and it’s a game that’s so serious for collectors that in its original packaging it evokes comparisons to someone you might know if you’re into baseball cards.
“I never had a Honus Wagner,” said Tod Curtis, a Bedford, Ind.-based orthodontist, who seriously collects NES games and was interviewed as part of an ESPN The Magazine story on this game and its legacy. “That’s what this game is to this hobby. I don’t know how many Honus Wagner cards are out there compared to how many Stadium Events there are. If the game is really that rare, you can see in 20 years it coming up at Christie’s, where people are going to pay $900,000.”
The story is a fascinating one with plenty of parallels to the card-collecting world, and, not surprisingly, the tale has prompted the attempted sale of a high-grade copy of the game.
You probably won’t believe the asking price right now on eBay.

Fans of NXT will have a collecting challenge on their hands as the new deluxe edition of a WWE video game will include one of 14 different Topps Relic cards — each with 10 versions — inserted as a bonus when purchasing the deluxe version of the game.

Collectors aiming to collect a master set of 2015 Topps Heritage WWE will get a head start on the release with the arrival of the newest WWE video game on Tuesday.
Every copy of WWE 2K16 for the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will include a Heritage card of WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, according to the @WWEGames Twitter account. There will be two versions of the card — one with a white border and one with a blue border for the set that uses the memorable 1985 Topps baseball design.
