A somber mailday from Newbury Comics … an autograph from The Cranberries’ Delores O’Riordan

This collector just had a bit of a somber mailday today as a package arrived from Newbury Comics with a couple of CDs inside.

They were copies of The Cranberries‘ album Something Else, a collection of their biggest hits from the past performed with an orchestra as well as three new songs released last year.

Each of them also came with something else, something extra, something more personal — an autograph from Dolores O’Riordan, who died Monday at age 46.

Gwen Stefani ‘Hollaback Girl’ storyboard art hits auction block

A fun and so far inexpensive piece of pop culture history has hit the auction block via Heritage Auctions and it’s a bit bananas.

B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

It’s some artwork form Dan Fraga, an artist who also has worked in comic books and television, and they’re the storyboards for the “Hollaback Girl” video from Gwen Stefani — one of the hits from her debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. back in 2005.

BlowoutCards.com Beach Boys sale offers good vibrations for collectors

Wouldn’t it be nice to own autographs from members of an iconic American band?

That’s a lot easier than you might think for The Beach Boys — in fact it can be guaranteed — thanks to BlowoutCards.com‘s newest Black November sale wave. It’s a prelude of sorts for what’s to come with Black Friday next week, but for fans of this band there’s no beating this one.

It’s the Pet Sounds of sales. It’s fun, fun, fun … and more.

As part of the sale, boxes and cases of Panini America’s 2013 Beach Boys card set should give you some good vibrations after you do some simple math. You typically get two autographs per 20-box case with five possible signers — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston or David Marks. Each of them signed an equal total of 350 cards. The Wilson card you see here? It went for $270 on eBay — and it’s not alone as a strong seller.

Now, how much are those cases or boxes? (That’s not a typo.) And the original prices on these boxes was originally $72, meaning those cases were originally $1,435 a pop.

Now pick up your jaw and keep reading to learn more about what’s in this one.

Black November Wave 7 is here … and here are five deals to consider

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices right now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com is in the midst its Black November sales now.

Wave 7 is here and many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes/cases that caught this collector’s eye.

2013-14 Panini Prestige NBA wax boxes and cases
This isn’t a high-end brand but it’s one that packs two autographs and two memorabilia cards in every box with roughly 20 insert cards, too. The key here? Giannis. His autographs are in here. His Rookie Cards are in here. He’s such a big deal, he doesn’t even need his long last name mentioned here. (Yes, I can spell it … Antetokounmpo.) If you land his auto, it can pay for at least a third, if not half of the case. This is a brand where you can also land the likes of Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant ink (among others) and there’s plenty of stuff in there — especially if you go with a volume buy with the low sale price.

Black November Wave 3 is here … and here are five deals to consider

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices right now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com is in the midst its Black November sales now.

Wave 3 is here and many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes/cases that caught this collector’s eye.

2016 Panini National Treasures racing hobby box
This one is as high-end as it gets for NASCAR and includes a few notables from beyond stock cars, too, making this bargain price even sweeter. Every box includes a book and has five other hits along with a base or parallel card — and it’s one that this collector has dug in on pretty hard via BlowoutTV group breaks. Check out that story here and then check out the price on this one. (There are cases, too.) Land the right names with some rarer memorabilia or ink combos and your box is covered. Even without the dollar signs in mind, this one is a fun rip with its stacked checklist that’s rich in stars from the past and present.

Black November Wave 2 is here … and here are five deals to consider

Wave 2 is here and many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes/cases that caught this collector’s eye.

2017 Topps Update Jumbo boxes and cases
This relatively new release is simply a fun one that’s stacked with Rookie Cards and moments from the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. This collector has ripped hanger boxes, blaster boxes and standard Hobby boxes and many of them have delivered good volume on those guys named Bellinger, Judge and even on the variations. (They don’t have to be rare to be fun.) I haven’t studied the jumbo breaks closely, but one auto and two other hits at this price makes for a fun rip — and if you get lucky you could do pretty well. While this might be a brand that seems somewhat plentiful now, once wax dries up there will be enough key players here to make it of interest later — and basic Topps flagship RCs seem to be growing in popularity, too.

Landing free autographs can be easy … if you buy the book

Legendary actor Tom Hanks, $19.77. Wrestling icon Ric Flair and his WWE star daughter Charlotte, $19.98.

Those are the prices this collector paid for the latest additions to his autograph collection thanks to the signed books section at one major book chain’s website — a new reminder that one of the easiest ways to land autographs from some big names is to watch the new arrival lists.

It’s a little oldschool — you don’t have to pay for the autograph just the book?!? — and a little risky as you have to buy from the right places using some strategy, but it’s one way that many collectors have landed ink without forking over big bucks or ripping packs to chase a particular name. (Some names, like Hanks for example, don’t even have card appearances.)

Asking price on a set of 1983 Madonna Polaroids? Just $350,000

The old saying is that a picture’s worth a thousand words, but in the case of pop music legend Madonna and an old set of Polaroids, that price is a bit different.

They’re $5,303 apiece — but fans of the icon still might call them priceless.

The set of 66 original images is being offered for $350,000 and it comes from Richard Corman, a portrait photographer who shot Madonna in 1983 — just six weeks before the arrival of her first album and her being thrust into the international spotlight.

“She had charisma like I have never seen,” Corman said in Vogue, which is noted in a listing for the photos via The Manhattan Rare Book Company. “When you look at somebody through the camera, you either see behind somebody’s eyes or you don’t. And with her, it was ‘Wow.'”

Slipknot’s Chris Fehn gets his own Allen & Ginter baseball card

He’s traveled the world a few times over, been on the cover of Rolling Stone, won a grammy and helped sell millions of albums in the last 20 years, but there’s just something different about appearing on a Topps baseball card.

And that’s something that Slipknot‘s Chris Fehn, aka No. 3, can add to his accomplishments beginning Wednesday with the arrival of 2017 Topps Allen & Ginter.

KISS & Vampirella? That showdown isn’t only pop culture crossover coming from Dynamite this month

KISS and Vampirella — seems like an unusual yet still natural crossover, right?

That’s just one of the comic books arriving this month — this one specifically today — via Dynamite Entertainment, a Mt. Laurel, N.J.-based publisher that has a tie to something beyond the typical realm of comic book characters.

KISS/Vampirella arrives with six different covers for issue No. 1 — all seen in a gallery below along with a sketch cover — and that’s a common trait for other series from Dynamite, many of which come with ties to movies, video games, famous book and comic strip characters, Internet stars and more.

Marvel: The Hip-Hop Covers Vol. 2 hardcover book coming this fall

Set to drop in September is Marvel: The Hip-Hop Covers Vol. 2, a hardcover collection of past variant comic book covers all in one place. It’s a virtual visual checklist of sorts for comics that are slightly tougher finds with nods to pop culture that give them some extra appeal beyond the comic shop.
