George Michael fans only have a few options to collect him on cards

The music world lost another of its memorable stars on Sunday as George Michael died at age 53.

He sold more than 100 million albums during his career as a solo artist and as half of the band Wham!, which arrived with the first of its three Platinum albums in 1983. His debut solo album, Faith, has sold more than 25 million copies since 1987.

But when it comes to cardboard? Well, collectors really only have two places to look.

Black Friday is nearly here & here are five preview wave deals to consider

15bwchromebb

If you hadn’t noticed this month, there have been a number of boxes with discounted prices now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com’s Black November has been rocking the hobby.

Now, though, we’re prepping for Black Friday with a preview wave of what’s to come.

Many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five options that caught this collector’s eye. (Be sure to click this link to see how much these will be discounted.)

s-l1600-22015 Bowman Chrome baseball hobby box
The rookie auto crop isn’t what a lot of Chrome buyers scout first but the list of names found in this one is impressive — Byron Buxton, Carlos Rodon, Francisco Lindor, Joc Pederson, Kris Bryant and Noah Syndergaard. There are, of course, then the prospects and plenty of rainbow potential that the Chromies are known to collect in bulk. A lower price on these boxes should entice more than a few rippers — and cards like this Bryant auto could be in there with two autographs in every box.

Black November Wave 10 is here — and here are five deals to consider

beachboysns

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com’s Black November Wave 10 hits today.

Many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases — and here are five boxes that caught this collector’s eye.

s-l16002013 Panini Beach Boys hobby box
This box is admittedly probably off the radar of many collectors but that doesn’t mean that it can’t deliver. In fact, these can deliver well if you pull the right ink. This Brian Wilson card here? It sold for more than you might think and he’s not alone when it comes to autos in there that have topped the $100 mark. Like the Panini Country release, there are non-traditional collectors chasing cards here to build sets or chase stuff they like with no regard for what something “should” cost based on what it is or its scarcity. Meanwhile, they may not know where to buy boxes — or not want to. Those things can lead to some surprising results — and that’s not the only surprise. Check out the price on this box.

If you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com begins its Black November sales today.

2010 USA National Teams (2009 Team) Baseball Box Set
There have been plenty of USA Baseball products in the last decade and this one is the one that went a bit high-end. Why? The talent. Among the autographs you can find here are Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Francisco Lindor, Trevor Bauer, Sonny Gray, Kolten Wong, Jameson Taillon and Albert Almora. This box carries a pretty hefty discount but all those key autos are still in there.

Five-page letter from Tupac Shakur commanding big bucks at auction

25603a_lg

Update: This sold for a whopping $172,725 after an initial estimate of $50,000.

“This remarkable letter from Tupac exemplifies what’s thrilling about the auction business,” said Ken Goldin, Founder of Goldin Auctions, “as this recently discovered find caught the eye of several serious and well-heeled bidders who went back and forth for hours until this record-setting price was reached.”

A four-page letter and an additional letter hand-written by Tupac Shakur while he was in New s-l1600York’s Clinton Correctional Facility in 1995 are on the auction block.

And the interest in them seems strong with bidding already in five-figures as part of the Goldin Auctions sale.

The mail was sent to Death Row Records publicist Nina Bhadreshwar and its letter notes that the essay had not been sent anywhere and was hers to decide what to do with it.

Pearl Jam plays Fenway Park Sunday — and that means “baseball cards”

s-l1600-5Pearl Jam has three dates to come lined up in some notable baseball stadiums this month and that combination of concerts and landmark MLB parks means one thing.

Baseball cards.

It also means some pretty sweet concert posters like the one above by artist Steve Thomas, but it’s the band’s 60-card set of “baseball cards” with a distinct 1991 Topps style complete with wax-paper packaging that are sparking interest online.

Steve Gleason’s story sparks interest in his few football cards

s-l1600-2If you don’t know the name Steve Gleason, you’re probably not alone — but plenty more people will know his story soon.

He played seven seasons in the NFL — all as a New Orleans Saint. He started just one of those contests and has a career stat sheet that includes two fumble recoveries and 59 total tackles.

His cardboard resume is even smaller with just 11 cards — 10 from the 2006 Topps Total set and one from a team-released set.

Why do these matter right now?

Whitney Houston’s awards can’t compete with piece of a sports icon in Heritage sale … at least for now

lf-8Items from Whitney Houston‘s estate are currently on the auction block — a selection of awards, memorabilia, clothing and items given to the legendary performer — via Heritage Auctions as part of an entertainment and music memorabilia auction ending on June 24.

The priciest item so far? It’s not her Emmy for “Saving All My Love for You,” her Billboard Award for “I Will Always Love You” or her MTV Video Music Award for “How Will I Know?”

It’s a pair of black Air Jordan V basketball shoes.

Old sets can include a few surprises … like Pro Set’s UK MusiCards

1991-Pro-Set-SuperStars-MusiCards-UK-boxIt sounded like a fun, cheap rip of some oldschool wax — a late-night buy just because it was a good deal — but it turned into another lesson about old cardboard.

This time, the product was a long-forgotten (and maybe unknown to some) release from Pro Set back in 1991 — the company’s UK edition of SuperStars MusiCards.

prince-purpleTo those of you who were around for Pro Set, you probably fondly remember the football card chases created by the Dallas, Texas-based company in 1989 and 1990 and the overproduction that was happening but we never saw because everybody (and their mother) was buying. By 1991, many of its products — and there were many in the non-football realm — arrived with a thud. Not because they were bad but because they were trying new things and new things didn’t always work. (And because the presses kept on rolling.) By 1993, the company was back down to football and by 1994 the company was gone completely.

And if you weren’t around then? Well, you missed out on some of the best simple cardboard of all times … and one example of that is this 1991 SuperStars MusiCards UK Editon.
