Buzz Collector Profile: Tony Yi — an Ichiro Suzuki fan aka The Ichiro Vault

Tony Yi

Also known as: @theichirovault and iamtony33 on Blowout Forum
Website: theichirovault.blogspot.com
Location: Washington
Work away from cards: Corporate management
Collecting since: 2011

Main focuses: Ichiro Suzuki, Robinson Cano and 1/1 cards — he owns 335 1/1s and 42 of those are Superfractors.
BuzzProfiles-Logo

Favorite teams: Seattle Mariners, Washington Huskies football

Current collecting projects: I used to work on rainbow projects often, and I have completed 14 of them. They have become too time-consuming so I now mainly concentrate on obtaining Ichiro, Cano and certain 1/1 cards. There is one Ichiro rainbow I will never stop trying for though and it’s from my favorite set, 2012 Topps Chrome. All I am missing is the Superfractor that sold years ago and I assume its in a PC collection forever. But if anyone knows who has it, please let me know.

Not all 2012 Topps Bryce Harper Rookie Cards are same — but they still can be found in wax & sets

Bryce Harper‘s blistering start to the season is likely to help fuel continued interest in his past cardboard — yes, he has a lot — but his 2012 Topps Rookie Cards might be the one target of collectors and investors that has the most potential and room for dramatic changes.

Why? The various forms of wax boxes and factory sets help make them more available for nearly everyone to chase and collect.

Eric Thames’ surprising start prompts look back at key cardboard

A new season’s new emerging names are doing just that.

Your MLB home run leader right now is Eric Thames of the Milwaukee Brewers, who has smacked seven longballs so far. The latest came as part of a 3-for-4 day Monday against the Cubs in Wrigley Field.

The 30-year-old entered this season with 21 homers in his previous three big-league seasons — his last being in 2012 with the Mariners. He hit 12 of those homers as a rookie with the Blue Jays in 2011 but struggled with a career average that’s up to .259 with his .405 start this year. How far off the radar was he? Thames spent the last three years playing in Korea’s KBO League — where he hit 124 homers in 390 games.

Missing nameplates & missing black plates part of Gypsy Queen’s quirks

Topps‘ revamped take on a retro-styled staple officially arrives on Wednesday and it includes a few types of parallels and/or variations for collectors to hunt for.

One of them in 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen? Nameless cards, aka missing nameplate cards. They’re found one per hobby box at one in every 21 packs and if it’s one of the short-print cards (Nos. 301-320) with this feature then the odds are a much steeper one in every 315 packs.

Simply enough, they are missing the nameplate on the fronts of the design, but they aren’t the only ones with what printing people would call “plate” issues.
