Buzz Poll: Do Ezekiel Elliott’s off-field issues worry you as a collector?

Ezekiel Elliott was a force as a rookie last season for the Dallas Cowboys, coming up just short of the NFL rookie rushing record but he might as well have gotten it based on cardboard standards.

His 1,631 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, along with success for his team that firmly put it back in the national spotlight, were highlights that sold some cards and then some. But fast-forward to today and the Rookie of the Year allegedly was entangled in some type of bar fight Sunday while already being investigated for domestic violence.

We’ve been there, done that like this before — many players have had many issues, this is nothing new — but not many of them have lit up the hobby as a rookie like Elliott did last season.

That leads to questions about cardboard …

Kyle Freeland’s career night should shine spotlight on some cards

Colorado Rockies rookie pitcher Kyle Freeland ended the first half of the season with a no-hitter lost in the ninth inning — but a one-hitter was good enough.

The lefty, who was the eighth-overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, racked up a career-high nine strikeouts in what was just his 18th big-league start. For the season, he sits at 9-7 with a 3.77 ERA after his gem at Coors Field.

The good news for collectors? Unlike those red-hot rookie sluggers, you can actually find Freeland’s autographs somewhat easily and affordably — perhaps because, you know, he pitches at Coors Field.

Need an example of an autopenned NFL card? Turn back the clock and look to the top … Commish was on it

Autopens — a machine used to replicate a person’s autograph by mechanical means — are typically the tools of politicians, but they’ve also left their mark on the football card world long before Dak Prescott allegedly got into that game.

In fact, you can turn the clock back to 1991 and 1992 for some textbook examples of certified autograph cards that were “signed” by the mechanical hands of three notable NFL names.

And one, a card that’s not been cataloged as such, is from former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

And just like Judge, who homered in his first game but had the night off save for a pinch-hitting appearance late in the Yanks’ 7-6 loss last night, it’s back in 2013 where you’ll find the start of his certified autograph résumé.
