Icons Unmasked prints offer look at memorable characters with a twist

Sometimes memorable characters inspire new ones — or new ones arrive that remind us of others but with a twist.

A series of art prints from Wisconsin-based artist Alex Solis gives us a reminder of just that.

Some legendary game-used lumber auctions close this week

A unique gamer from one of MLB’s most-iconic sluggers is among several game-used pieces up for grabs in the latest Goldin Auctions sale.

It’s not a bat used by Roger Maris, Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, Ichiro Suzuki or Alex Rodriguez, but all of those stars’ clubs are up for grabs, too, as part of a series of auctions ending this week.

eBay Buzz: Bart Simpson keeps selling after all these years

It’s a simple sketch card of an iconic character in pop culture penned by his creator and it’s not even rare.

But it is pricey.

Maybe you have the Honus Wagner of Nintendo games sitting at home …

A little-known Nintendo game then is a well-known Nintendo game now — at least to serious collectors who are known to fork over plenty of cash for it.

It’s Stadium Events, and it’s a game that’s so serious for collectors that in its original packaging it evokes comparisons to someone you might know if you’re into baseball cards.

“I never had a Honus Wagner,” said Tod Curtis, a Bedford, Ind.-based orthodontist, who seriously collects NES games and was interviewed as part of an ESPN The Magazine story on this game and its legacy. “That’s what this game is to this hobby. I don’t know how many Honus Wagner cards are out there compared to how many Stadium Events there are. If the game is really that rare, you can see in 20 years it coming up at Christie’s, where people are going to pay $900,000.”

The story is a fascinating one with plenty of parallels to the card-collecting world, and, not surprisingly, the tale has prompted the attempted sale of a high-grade copy of the game.

You probably won’t believe the asking price right now on eBay.

If you hadn’t noticed this month, there have been a number of boxes with discounted prices now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com’s Black November has been rocking the hobby.

2015 Bowman Chrome baseball hobby box
The rookie auto crop isn’t what a lot of Chrome buyers scout first but the list of names found in this one is impressive — Byron Buxton, Carlos Rodon, Francisco Lindor, Joc Pederson, Kris Bryant and Noah Syndergaard. There are, of course, then the prospects and plenty of rainbow potential that the Chromies are known to collect in bulk. A lower price on these boxes should entice more than a few rippers — and cards like this Bryant auto could be in there with two autographs in every box.
