What’s Buzz-worthy: There were only 6,000 serial-numbered 10-box cases made for this one, which explains why this collector didn’t remember seeing these back in the day before finding this pack in a Fairfield repack of miscellaneous cardboard. Curiosity got me … and now it gets you. (Hey, you clicked.) First, some history … the WLAF was founded in 1989 and played its first games in 1991 and then had a second season in 1992 before play was suspended. It was revived in 1995 and then became NFL Europe in 1998 and that lasted until 2007. On cardboard we had Pro Set with WLAF cards in 1991 and then this set and a 1992 set from Ultimate and then a 1996 Score release. After that there was a small NFL Europe presence in later years as part of a few NFL brands, complete with certified autos. … Now back to this one. This pack included a Stan Gelbaugh card — he was the first WLAF MVP — but not much else. The chase here? Wild Cards that have a stripe, meaning you could exchange your insert for a quantity of base cards matching the stripe’s number. Stripes came with 5s, 10s, 20s, 50s, 100s and 1000s. Some base cards here have actually sold for 99 cents on eBay — likely college collectors chasing a card of every guy from their school and they can’t find these anywhere else. (Thankfully schools are noted on the card backs.) This one’s pretty forgettable but I could see myself trying to figure out which of my school’s players might be found here. Someday.
